You Didn't Leave Me A Message - How Do I Know You Didn't Misdial?

Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Florida Network Realty BK 3030920

I'm sure we've all had this happen, and this could well be a divisive line in the AR community.

I, as a matter of habit, do not typically return missed calls from unknown callers who do not leave me messages.

I've misdialed phone numbers in the past, and if I get a person on the other end, I simply explain I've misdialed.

I've received misdialed calls on my phone who handle it the same or similar ways.

I do not typically leave a message if I misdial and get someone's voicemail; I kind of thought everyone handled it the way I handle it (a classic faux pas).

If you wanted to reach me, and you get my voicemail, I would encourage you to leave a message, understanding that I may be occupied in some fashion that prevents me from answering my phone.  Oh, and my outgoing message says on a daily basis something to the effect of:

You've reached the voicemail of Carol Zingone with Prudential Network Realty. Today is (insert date), and I'm sorry I can't take your call personally at this time. Please leave your name, number, and message after the tone, and I will call you back. Thank you & have a great day.

Now, if my outgoing message were more generic, or didn't identify me as a Realtor, I could see callers not leaving messages.

What's your MO with missed calls from unknown callers who don't leave messages? I'm curious....and I might even call you!

I call them back.  Had it happen to me on several homes and the people just don't walk to talk into a phone without someone on the other end talking to them.  Had a sell or two when I've done this

Missed calls with no messages are most of the time leads for me. . for some reason they are a little too shy to leave a message and when I call them back . . ."someone called me form their number?" They open up

If it's a call from someone I have saved in my contacts, so I know who it is, I will usually call them back, assuming they called on purpose.

If it's a caller I don't recognize, from within my area, I will sometimes call back if I have extra time, but if I'm straight out, I will assume if they wanted to actually speak with me, they would leave a message.  But my answer message gives quite a lot of information, so it is possible my message answered their question.

Carol, I call back and identify myself and apogize for not being able to take the call. Sometimes the office number is froward to my cell phone.

Nice post Carol. When I return calls without a message I generally reach someone who says, "I didn't call you." My feeling is I don't carry a heart in a cooler, so emergenies are not critical. If someone wants to talk with me they leave a message or I don't worry about it.

Good Morning Carol, I usually just let the call 'go'.  It is too easy with todays cell phones to misdial a number.  An excellent question.

That is a missed opportunity if not called back. I call back and appoligize for being unable to answer when called. I have had great responses and most of the time I am told they do not like to leave messages.

I'm with you Carol.  I generally do not call back an unknown number.  It annoys me when they don't leave a message though.  If it's a number I know, I do call back however,

James - thanks. I've obviously wavered enough on this to blog about it, maybe I will start calling some back to see if I generate biz from it.

Fernando - I like that approach; and from my response above to James, I may just start trying it. And, stop being annoyed by it!

Ann -I agree, if I have time, I may be more tempted to call them back.

Rob -I typically wait to see if someone leaves a message, but maybe this is a tweak I need to start employing.

Keith - Same here; my office forwards calls to my cell, in which case, I have no idea of who is calling me. I try to take every call I possibly can; sometimes, my schedule does not permit, however.

Sheila - We have the same MO then!  I have read enough comments above to re-consider, at least some of the time.

Dan - Thanks for your comment; as I mentioned above, I just wanted to see how others handle it, and I appreciate others feeling similar to me.

John - I understand how some people don't like to leave messages, but there are times our schedules don't permit us to get every call.

Christine - I got mixed responses as you can see, I may start calling some back rather than being so single minded about it.
