An Intriguing Way to Vacation: Homeexchange.com

beach houseSummer is right around the corner.  With gas prices on the rise, travelers will be looking for creative ways to vacation.  A concept that has always seemed intriguing to me is the idea of trading your home for someone else's, and the web site homeexchange.com offers the ability to do just that.

Home exchange is simple.  You offer your home to someone for a specified period of time, and they reciprocate in kind.  Quite often, the property is exchanged at no or low cost, so the only budget items you incur for your vacation are your food, transportation, and entertainment.

On homeexchange.com, you can join the system for $9.95 per year and have access to thousands of properties around the world.  In the state of Massachusetts alone, homeexchange.com has over 11,000 homes listed for vacation exchange.  Imagine a poolside vacation in the Berkshire Mountains, or refreshing stay near the ocean in Rockport. If you want to get out of state, there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

Of course there are liability issues to consider, but that is the case with any type of vacation arrangement.  Be sure to research your exchange partner as best you can, and also talk with your home insurance company to see if a home exchange requires a different type of insurance for your property.

A vacation home exchange may offer you the opportunity to get away to places you may not have considered.  Why not research this vacation option and see if it might work for you?

I am always intrigued by these type of exchanges, but a little apprehensive about how yo check out the other folks.

Joan:  That is probably the biggest concern, next to the property being what the owner says it is.  I suppose you can ask for references, maybe google the address and so on.

Hi Kathryn - I am with Joan.  The other house's condition is a second concern.  Interesting though.
