Someone on My Blog Suggested This.....

If there were a house fire, and you had the opportunity to grab three things on your way out to safety, what would they be?

There was a lot of discussion about this at the Senior Center today when I volunteered for the Shining Stars Over 85 luncheon.  We had 40 seniors who got roses and great lunch and some special attention.

What a great event, and we had 45 guests to go along with the seniors, too.  This will be a great memory, and I can post the pictures later.

Back to the question,   three things????

I have four pets.  Two in the house and two in the garage.  So, first the two in the house and my laptop.  Hopefully, the man of the house gets the dogs out and some money.....

What would you do?

Suzanne,  This is a great question. I know first I would grab my cat, Yazmine. Then I would grab my laptop. I'll have to think about number three.

I have a "picture drawer," so that would be one thing. My dog's too big to pick up, but I would certainly drag her, if needed. The laptop would be the third thing, I guess.

Bringing you home...

I was thinking along these lines today. Only I was thinking about the recent storms and if I had time to grab a few things before a major storm happened what would it be.... it's a toughy and no brainer at the same time. Kids, Bible, laptop and phone. If more time existed I'd start with the kid's needs; pillowpets, favorite blankets and books/toys.

You guys are great. Kids first, of course, pets are running a close second. and Liz, I get it...some of those photos are hard to replace.  Scan them NOW...and put them on a flashdrive and get it to someone else's house so if you go down you have a backup.

Lindsay, you are too funny.  Three things.....not all the time in the world to get the whole house, but knowing you....you already have the suitcase packed.

House not packed... but in my mind I have a plan if I needed to move fast. I can pack for a trip in a pretty quick minute... most days. :) And, we have clothes at my moms in case of 'emergencies' so I'd be well on my way that way.

My son and his family are waiting out a storm at our house tonight since we have a basement. They brought an external hard drive, their loveletters from early in their marriage, and a t-shirt quilt made of their toddler's baby clothes.

Suzanne:

A question everyone should mull over.  I would grab a box full of pictures, my laptop and my good jewelry.   I am in the in the process of scanning all our photos and putting them on flash drives which will be kept in our safe deposit box.  I am doing the same thing with important papers.  But we have so many collectibles which we treasure, but couldn't take with us if an emergency forced us to evaluate our home.

Suzzane, I do not have to mull over it. Very simple: 1. Our two cats,( one just went to rainbow bridge a few days ago.....)2. My Laptop 3. My Camera.....no money left since the past couple of years:)))

Definitely my cats, my purse and my laptop.  The dog would follow me.

On this note, do any of you actually have a plan in place?  I actually used to work at the State Fire Marshall's office and during Fire Prevention Week, we were encouraged to make a plan.  Our kids were young, but we actually made a map of the house, and decided on a meeting spot outside.  If a fire was blocking our way out, we have escape ladders in both kids bedrooms.  My husband was to go get our daughter because she was bigger/older, and I was to go get our son.  We didn't get an escape ladder for our bedroom, because we both agreed that we would die trying to save our kids before we saved ourselves.

Suzanne,I would have to grab the "inside' dog, box of my son's pictures and my laptop. Hopefully my eleven year old son wouldn't be home because he would try to empty out his room, including guitars/basses/amps/other musical props. It would be hard to stop him since he is a "collector" at heart! Carol

Hi Suzanne, Of course the dog, I've heard that you should have all of the information for your accounts...although I can't imagine grabbing the bill box on my way out! LOL  The dog, my computer and our photographs.  My husband would by like Carol's son, I'm sure, and take his guitars.

Suzanne, the kid, the dog, the wife....not necessarily in that order.  The rest is insured.  Thought-provoking and I liked Tracie's answer.  The beauty of living in a rambler is that you don't have to have those fire ladders hanging around in the room, because if they are in a closet, you waste precious time trying to get those out and ready to roll.
