Although Memorial Weekend may be the undeclared "first weekend of summer", and brings more visitors and vacationers to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, it is important to remember WHY we have this long weekend to relax and enjoy the events. Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May which is May 30th this year. Although the day was originally known as Decoration Day and honored soldiers who died in the Civil War, the day now honors all who have died while in military service.
The LuLu Palooza Free Memorial Weekend Festival will kick off on Saturday, May 28th with the Soul Rebels Brass Band. It is said that this band just doesn’t fit into a “category” with its sounds of Mardi Gras funk, soft rock and reggae. The night will move on with Johhny Sketch and the Dirty Notes from New Orleans. Sunday will feature Paul Thorn from Tupelo, Mississippi who has toured with musicians such as Toby Keith, Sting, Jeff Beck, and John Prine. Also playing on Sunday will be Randall Bramblett who is a legend in music circles for his songwriting and musicianship. All of these performances take place at Lulu’s-at-Homeport Marina on East 25th Avenue in Gulf Shores. Lulu (Lucy) Buffett is the sister of “Chief Parrothead” Jimmy and one never knows when big brother Jimmy will stop by for a bowl of gumbo.
The Wharf Amphitheater in Orange Beach will feature Lynyrd Skynyrd & ZZ Top at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 29th. Tickets range from $15.00 to $70.50 and the box office number is 251-224-1020.
Historic visits can be part of the Memorial Day weekend at Fort Morgan located at the western end of Highway 180. The fort can also be reached from Dauphin Island on the Mobile Bay auto ferry. Fort Morgan was active during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II. Since 1834 this fort has guarded Mobile Bay and visitors can see exhibits of weapons, uniforms, letters, and photographs of soldiers who have served at Fort Morgan.
Another historic visit well worth the hour drive from Gulf Shores is the USS Alabama at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile. Visitors can explore one of America’s most decorated battleships, the USS Alabama, which measures 680 feet from stem to stern. The “Mighty A” became a public museum in 1965 and since the opening date over 13 million visitors have stood in admiration of her power and service.
