Random thought; has anyone noticed that the number of members on ActiveRain has gone up by about 5000 in the last two months? It seems to be adding about 500 a day for the past few days. What are THEY doing to create the stir?
Do you google your targeted keywords to see where you rank? If so, you're getting a false impression of your ranking in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). Think you're HOT? Maybe NOT!
When you search for your own stuff, Google already knows your preferences, and gives you what you love - yourself, your own website, and perhaps even your competitors sites if you've viewed them frequently enough.
To check on your actual ranking in the SERPs, you need to use a tool like the Firefox Add on Rank Checker from SEOBook.com.
Once you get it installed, you can access the Rank Checker under the Tools Section of Your Browser:
You can then feed the tool the terms you're most interested in, for example:
We fed it some of the keywords we have targeted . . . several months ago we consistently ranked in the 180s for "Austin Appraiser" which means we usually showed up on page 18 in the SERPs. In other words, the chances of someone finding our site when Googling for "Austin Appraiser" was zero, zippo, zilch. We'd been having too much fun on local interest articles and forgot to optimize our core pages for people actively looking for a real estate appraiser in Austin! Those pages, quite frankly, sucked.
We worked on those pages, and for the last month we've been consistently in slots 6 to 8 in the SERPs as determined by independent sources, which explains why our call volume from the site has gone up considerably since the beginning of the year.
Here is how that looked in Rank Checker's Add on for Firefox:
You can see we're not even on the SERPs radar for the last two "Real estate appraiser" and "Certified residential appraiser". Although the searches for these terms are very high, we don't feel like they're specific enough for our local market to make them keywords we really want to target, and the national competition to rank for them is HIGH. You'll be making some similar decisions as you work through your own keyword rankings when optimizing your site.
Hope this gives you yet another thing to think about during the three hours in 24 when you're not already swamped with the other work for your real estate business!
