Backup Backup Backup Or Get Massively Stressed

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Hit Panic ButtonThis is a blog post with an absolute REQUEST FOR ACTION on your part. No I am not trying to sell anything to you, but please check your status or MAKE A DECISION after reading this.

Backup Backup Backup Or Get Massively Stressed

Immerse yourself in this scenario having lost a document, a draft blog post or all of a sudden your computer MASSIVELY dies. They all die all around you, and WHAT do you do? Seriously immerse yourself into that picture. OK, Best Buy gets everyone to go out and buy a new computer. BUT seriously you have to be so stressed out if you can't recover your work, PDF files, templates, photos, etc. OK let us use our brain here so NOT to panic. Tips to stay out of these weeds.

Long Word documents/blog posts - save under ANOTHER file name along the way to not lose all your work

External saving - use a memory stick or external hard drive to offload files

Online backup - a bunch of resources

  • Evernote  $5/month for computer, iPhone, Android
  • Dropbox  creates a 2GB free folder on your desktop linked to online
  • MobileMe  storage $99/yr for Mac users
  • Carbonite

OK, call to action..... at least pick SOMETHING off this list to not ever be in this panic mode. Many real estate offices are going paperless with contracts uploaded to a central network server which is backed up nightly. But your life is more than real estate. Do some backup for YOU. REGULARLY!!!

It makes sense to back up everything but most people dont realize they should be doing so until its too late and their computer crashes

Mike: With the crash I know comes the panic. I ran through the panic recently on a Word file even where I didn't save it early and often to another name. BIG mistake. Work lost....

William: Good point. I thought about LOST or STOLEN computers too besides a malfunction, crashed hard drive or just dying computer. With the smallness of computers they can easily be misplaced. Left on a vehicle or table or whatever. Good thing you are very aware of good backup techniques....

Gary, very timely post. As I sat in my basement last night during a tornado warning The weather guy mentioned the storm was passing through the area of town where my office is located. I immediately thought of how good it is that I have online backups on one of the services you mentioned in your post.

Gary, I just found you.  Someone suggested I come over.  What a treasure trove of great advice.  And, like Rich, I have just backed up to a hard drive, but I am thinking of some alternatives.

Dave: Good thing you have things taken care of. Those online versions are some of the popular ones, at least the ones I am aware of.

Ron: Just review what works for you and don't let CRITICAL stuff get lost.

Or if you enjoy stress, unhappiness, frustration don't backup and watch all that you have created disappear.

You are so right!  I recently backed up (I think) my wordpress blog.  I cannot imagine how miffed I would be if I lost all those posts I have done!  I probably have more things that need to be backed up as well-- thanks for the reminder!

You may remember a few months ago, I lost my outlook...all the files, all the emails, all the documents I saved.  It was horrifying...I back up weekly now!  lol

What an important reminder, sometimes we are so swamped with our daily busy goings that we forget to backup our important datas. I will try to make some archives this holiday weekend.

Gary - A very good reminder.  Also remember to store your backups in an offsite location, preferably quite a distance from your computer.

I cannot stress enough to back everything up on a DAILY basis.  My PC crashed a couple of years ago and my lap top crashed at the end of last year.  I managed to recover most of my data, but unfortunately I lost some.  I didn't back it up DAILY.  Now it is on my schedule every day.

Thanks for sharing the important message.

I almost learned a hard lesson about not backing up regularly......thank goodness I didn't lose anything.  That was scary and something I don't want to relive!
