The Relocation Industry: An Outsiders View

Last week we attended the Worldwide ERC conference in Las Vegas.  This was our first Relocation event, so we didn’t know what exactly to expect when we showed up to Caesar’s Palace. We first got directed to a YP40 (Young Professionals under 40) session.  We got a chance to meet some of the up and comers in the relocation industry. From there we continued to attend other events and connect with others at the exhibition hall.

What we learned is that the Relocation industry is unlike any other industry. Now while there are companies competing for business, it’s still like one big family, kind of like a little big brother rivalry. We were absolutely stunned with how helpful and friendly every single person we met was. If we had a question, they had an answer, if they didn’t know they gladly introduced us to someone who would know.

The biggest thing we learned on this trip was something that many people kept saying, “It’s not about the sale, it’s about the relationship”. What a great outlook as opposed to the people who push and push to get a sale, and have difficulties closing deals. If you just focus on developing that relationship, the sales will come. Think about it, are you more willing to help a friend or a random person who comes up to you to ask for help?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve emailed someone or called them and it’s taken days or weeks to hear back, so we were also surprised with how quickly everyone was to respond to follow up emails or phone calls. Within the Quicken Loans Family of Companies, it is understood that if anyone calls you or emails you, you are expected to respond within 24 hours. It was definitely a nice to change when the individuals we emailed followed up with us within a day. A great activity for your business to practice.

If you ever have the chance to enter into the Relocation Industry, whether it’s getting a job or doing business, I would highly recommend it. If you’re looking for an industry who leads by example, Relocation is it!
