Who to Notify Once You've Moved!

By
Real Estate Agent with Meservier & Associates of The Bean Group

Once you've moved in to your new home, it's time to notify everyone of your address change.
Use this list as a starting point:

  • Department of  Motor Vehicles
  • Post office, bank (don't forget to order new checks), voter registration
  • Human resources and payroll where you work
  • Insurance companies, doctors offices, schools, places of worship, gym memberships
  • Cell phone company, magazine subscriptions
  • Credit card companies, loan companies
  • Personal and professional clubs, licensing boards, organizations, and memberships with benefit plans (like AAA for your car)
  • Lawyer, financial advisor, accountant
  • Regular deliveries (such as restaurant delivery places or CSAs)
  • And don't forget all your friends and family!

Save time if by doing it online if possible; check out a company's website first.

Great list. Most people forget to let the DMV know of address change until they have to renew the license.

If you are a licensed real estate agent in Virginia you had doggone well better notify DPOR within 10 days of your address change or you will be out of business.

It is so much easier to notify folks that you have moved. With cell phones and Internet, is it even necessary to send just moved cards?

When you are moving, you get tunnel vision. Getting from point A to point B is all you can see or know. This list becomes invaluable at the appropriate time....thank you

This is a really nice checklist. I usually add some of the actual phone numbers, like to the utility companies, since I already have them in my contact numbers. And as a sign of the times, newspaper subscriptions are down, but if you are still keeping the subsscriptions, they should be added too.

Nice list, I still receive mail from the old owners at our house 5 years later for some reason. =)  Moving can also be a way to eliminate junk mail if you omit a few people from the list too. ;)
