The Shenandoah Valley is a historian's dream come true. If you're fascinated by the founding fathers, the Revolutionary War and the events surrounding the fight for Independence, you'll find plenty to keep you busy in Winchester and the communities throughout the Shenandoah Valley.
Winchester, VA, hosts George Washington's surveying headquarters, as well as marked areas Washington surveyed. Daniel Morgan is also a notable Revolutionary War hero associated with the Winchester area. But you can't go very far in the valley without running into a historical marker explaining a Civil War event.
This Memorial Day weekend, Strasburg, VA, will be celebrating its
250th anniversary. Along with that anniversary, Strasburg will host the re-enactment of the Great Train Raid pulled off by Stonewall Jackson. Jackson boldly captured a Union transport and supply train which he disassembled and transported through the valley and into Southern hands. The re-enactment will exhibit a replica of one of the locomotives Jackson captured. Mort Kunsler will be on hand to sign his prints depicting the train raid.
