"FLAGS IN" Honors Our Fallen Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetary

When I have ever seen pictures of Arlington National Cemetary I have always been awed by the precision of the row after row of grave markers, and the understanding that each marker represents too many of our fallen heroes.

On the Thursday prior to Memorial Day weekend after the final funeral of the day a flag is placed in front of each marker, more than 250,000 of them.  They are all removed prior to the cemetary opening on the Tuesday after Memorial Day.

FLAGS IN, Arlington National Cemetary

From the Arlington National Cemetary Site:

Soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) will be joined by service members from the U.S. Marine Corps Ceremonial and Guard Company, U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard, U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard in placing small American flags, known as grave decorating flags, on the gravesites of all who rest at Arlington National Cemetery for the Memorial Day weekend.

“Flags In” has been conducted annually since the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) was designated as the Army’s official ceremonial unit in 1948. Flags are placed one foot in front and centered before each headstone in the cemetery. Flags will also be placed at the Tomb of the Unknowns by the Tomb Sentinels and at the cemetery’s Columbarium.

Billy and Sydney made the trip down to see the soldiers place the flags on Thursday evening. We will all board the Metro on Monday to head back to Arlington to spend the day honoring our military. We will make a stop at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to pay our respects as well.

FLAGS IN, Arlington National Cemetary

This Memorial Day weekend when you are enjoying the sun, fun, and family please take a moment to remember our troops protecting our freedoms.  Remember those who have gone before and those that will give the ultimate sacrifice.  Don't forget to honor the families too!

On this Memorial Day I would like to say a special word of thanks to my dad and my husband, both military retirees.   I would also like to share my over-whelming gratitude for the service of so many of our clients and friends.  In the last ten years I have been blessed to assist many veterans realize their dreams of home ownership. Thank you for your service and the sacrifice of your families.

Please keep Marlon Marner, Leland Niu, Michael Rakosi, Stacy Lane, David Burton and their families in your prayers. Michael and Marlon are currently deployed in "the sandbox".  Stacy and Leland have completed their most recent tours. David served 4 deployments since he became a Marine in 2001. May God bless and keep all of our military families in the palm of his hand.

Hi Bridget,  I saw a short clip on how careful they are to make sure each flag is placed at just the right position.  Remembering them this weekend !

Remembering all our heroes this weekend, they and their families have given so much so that we can be free from persecution and have freedom of choice, freedom of speach and the lifestyle we all enjoy.  I salute all our heroes.
