What It Takes

Walking on the waterfront in downtown Seattle makes me ponder things I might never ponder at all.

I can see the cruise ship as big as any ten story building when it docks. I know the people will disembark, cameras in hand to walkabout, or hop on the sparkly clean white buses waiting to whisk them to one of our fabulous resort hotels, or get into one of the dozens of taxis waiting to accommodate them.

What I didn't factor into the equation, was the amount of goods loaded from our docks to feed and lavish the participants of a luxury cruise with everything they desire! The dock was loaded to capacity with pallet after pallet  of fresh produce, freezer containers, and goods carefully packaged to be delivered on board by crane.

Look at all those pallets of fresh produce, frozen and packaged goods!

I stood beside a man with his bicycle as we both clicked photos with our smart phones. We looked at each other in amazement as the goods were loaded and crew members scurried to perform their many tasks at hand. I smiled at the man, shrugged my shoulders and said "Who Knew?"...He smiled back and exclaimed, "Now we do!"

Just like the TV comercial says, "It's all about logistics!"

Judi - very interesting photojournalism. We mostly have no clue of the logistics involved in changing passengers and their requirements often in a matter of hours. I have seen some very large ships in for refit as well in the Brisbane River. One had its lifeboats and launches on land in a single file that stretched over a mile. Certainly exercises in timing precision.

Judi,

Love your moment shared with the man snapping the picture.  We had a similar one, when were snapping picture of a smaller cruise ship that docked in the distance (our harbor is too shallow to be up close and personal).  Our pictures did not turn out well, but we did have a wonderful time chatting with a couple equipped with a great camera and telescopic lens as they snapped away.  Thaniks for sharing this moment with us.  A

QuickFree~ Good point!

Hi Larry~ I really was quite amazed at the amount of effort put forth from our docks! The revenue generated by the actions I was witnessing has to be astounding. I am going to do some research to see if I can discover what is spent by the cruise lines on their stops in Seattle!

Have a great weekend Larry!...Three more days left! And we conquered the 31 Day Challenge!

Hi Alexandra~ That was yet another fun experience, my permanent relocation here from Scottsdale has been a wonderful adventure for us! Can't wait to see what LOL is sharing with us today!

Judi, I would never had thought, but there are as many people as a small city traveling on those ships, so it makes sense.  It is funny that we never think about some things until we see them.  This is one of those things that I would have never thought about either!

Gives a different perspective, huh?! I never would have thought about that. But, then again, I don't think much about where my food comes from...because I HAVE it. If I couldn't afford it, I would probably think differently. Something I should think about more often. (So I know that's not the point of this entry...just what it made me think of!)

Hope you have a fabulous weekend! We have MUCH to be thankful for!

Judi,

I've never seen anything like this. It must be really something to see in person. Your photographs are excellent! I learned a lot from reading your post. There's much FOOD for thought in this one!

I love your creative way of blogging about something different; yet something that impacts our way of life.

Patricia

Hi Chris~

We see the Alaskan Cruise ships come into port all week long! You have had some great adventures! My husband and I were at the beach last week and I saw a group of harbor seals basking in the sun on a buoy. It reminded me of your post of an encounter with them in California!...

Hi Shannon~

We do have much to be thankful for. Our families, health, our homes, a way to make a living, and our country which so many have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect.

Thank you for sharing time with me each week.

I'll see you in the rain Shannon...

Hi Patricia~

There is always so much to see if we only look. I appreciate that you enjoy my style. I started in Active Rain several years ago in Scottsdale Arizona. My posts were generic when I began blogging. Homes here, Condos for sale there. Then I got into photography and my world changed.

I started taking pictures of Statues at community entries, water features, pools, and it just expanded from there to me blogging about what I love about a neighborhood. Looks like you gave me a blog post idea Patricia!

Enjoy this special weekend...
