CH__CH - What's Missing?

Matthew 16:18 (The Message)

17-18Jesus came back, "God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn't get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I'm going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.

CH__CH What's missing? UR - don't miss going to Church!

Jesus loves the church. He gave His life for the church. If you are ever going to be victorious in the spiritual battles of life, you must realize that Christianity is not a “Lone Ranger” religion. The church is here to bind together and win the battle together.

The famous old hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers.”  has one stanza really stands out in this regard: “Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane, But the church of Jesus constant will remain. Gates of hell can never against that church prevail; We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail.”

Jesus loves the Church, which is His body.  If we love Jesus, we will love what He loves.

Thanks for the reading this morning, Paul.  I always enjoy the story of Jesus lifting Peter up, even after all of Peter's shortcomings.  And Onward Christian Soldiers always reminds me of being a kid at church and listening to my mother's beautiful voice.

Onward Christian Soldier has many meanings. For me, it takes me back to Valley Forge Military Academy where my husband graduated, and watching all the Cadets march into church. More recently it takes me to West Point, watching my son do the same thing. But the meaning never wavers, we all are called to be Christ's soldiers...to battle for His church.

Thank you Ken and Leslye for your wonderful response. (Phil above too) I'm sure you are proud of having your son follow your steps to West Point. May God be with him as he serves our country.

I have always loved the old hymns, and still do. They have so much meaning written into each verse, they are powerful messages of God's love, grace and other attributes.

The best part of being a soldier for Christ, is He goes before us and we are left holding the banner. He has fought and won the real wars in our life, something that we could never have done for ourselves, or for Him on our own. It's like the battle of Jericho, or David and Goliath. We are just trying to do our small little part, but God is directing the stone, we just need to keep our arms raised (Think Moses). The other great thing is God is willing to use us no matter our past, or present mistakes. We don't have to be perfect (and we are not), but God accepts us, cleanses us, teaches us, makes us battle ready, and before you know it, we have volunteered to do His will.
