TOPANGA DAYS 2011: Memorial Weekend Event

By
Mortgage and Lending with Los Angeles & Ventura Counties in CA

Topanga Days is an annual event high in the canyons of Topanga Canyon, CA and is arguably the last bastion of hippie-dom in Los Angeles.

On a 12-acre parcel, south of Mulholland Dr. on Topanga Canyon Rd. is the Topanga Canyon Community House, which has been hosting the Memorial weekend event since 1973.

Topanga Days (28th-30th) is known for it's great music but each year the games become more popular and even infamous.  This year promises to bring it all up a notch with more fun, bigger messes, and of course, prizes for the winners!

The games kick off on Saturday May 28 with the cutest event, the Baby Derby.  If your baby is or will be in the crawling stage of life, this is the event for you.

Other events during the three days will be the sack race, egg toss, water bucket fill, watermelon seed spitting, bat spinning, berry pie eating and the horse shoe tournament.

You can sign up for any of these games in advance, by sending an e-mail to silbarsoup@yahoo.com.  Please include your name, e-mail and cell phone number.

There is a possibility of a tug-o-war contest where teams of five people would battle it out over a pit of water.  If you are interested in forming a team and want to show the Community House Board that this type of game sound fun, send an e-mail to Adam at adaboy@sbcglobal.net.

Donne:  Hippie-dom.  Well, now you're talking my language.  When I taught junior high school back in the 1960's... I was one of those hippie teachers.  What a cool time it was.  Be sure to wear a flower in your hair !

Donne, question about the baby race, do you qualify if you are once again approaching the crawling stage in life? :) :) :)

Donne - Yep Hippie days rekindled. It looks like a lot of the community comes together to enjoy the festivities. Three full days it is usually just a Saturday and Sunday.

What a good, old-fashioned fun day(s)  I'm quite good at egg tosses . . . and the baby derby, is that like the soap box derby where they'll see who can slide down the ramp the fastest??  HA HA HA.  I love driving through Topanga Canyon, beautiful area.  Have fun!!

hippie-dom, I like that word Donne.  I'm going to use it tomorrow and that's what my Blog will be about one of these days.  Sounds like a really cool event.  I'd love to see those babies.

Karen - We all were so much cooler back then.  LOL  Just today, I was reminded (thanks to Tish & CA) of what I was like back in high school and college (late 70's & early 80's).  Those were the days.

George - Hmmm.....LOL

Ken - It's been quite a few years since I've been there but it is a whole weekend of events.  The weather is supposed to be really nice this weekend too.  However, I plan to spend Sunday with friends here in Simi at the Cajun Festival.

Thx for stopping by everyone; I really appreciate it.  Have a good night everyone and a wonderful holiday weekend too.  :)

Karen - It's a pretty big event and seems to be getting bigger and better every year.

Carla - It is truly gorgeous down there.  It's actually right down the road from the Topanga State Park.  It's going to be a really gorgeous down there this weekend.

Tammy - I've never seen it but the baby race sounds trippy.  Topanga is truly like a step back in time because it is really like a little hippie community.

Thx for stopping by ladies; I really appreciate it.  Have a good night everyone and a wonderful holiday weekend too.  :)

Donne, this sounds like a great time.  It would be fun to see what we all looked like in the 70s.  I had hair parted in the middle that was so long it reached my butt.  I may have to go dig out some old photos.......

Endre - Unfortunately, the 60's hippies were before my time (although, I was born in the sixties - does that count?  LOL).  I also love Topanga because it's just so gorgeous there.  The state park (just down the road from Topanga days) is one of the finest in the country.

Ann - That's funny you should mention what we looked like when we were younger.  I was playing around the rain on Friday with some other rainers and talked about how in high school I have long, straight hair down to my @$$ too.  However, when I got to college, I started dating a punk drummer (it was the early 80's) and I chopped off my hair and I had about an inch high mohawk, with shaved sides and a long pink tail in the back.

OY VEY!!!  Definitely not my best hair days!  A few years later, I hit my heavy metal stage and had the heavy metal, big hair.  Remember spiral perms?  Definitely my worst hair days!

Mimi - The weather is actually quite nice this weekend.  I'm actually going to a Cajun Festival on Sunday with hubby and friends.

Ron - I'm guessing the only topless babes are going to be the ones crawling in the derby.  LOL

Marie - Topanga Days is a wonderful way to start the summer.

Thx for stopping by everyone; I really appreciate it.  Have a good night everyone and a wonderful holiday weekend too.

Hi Donne,

I remember those days. LOL

And all those "hippies from the past" are now our leaders and politicians too.

Go figure.

Have a great day.
