Can $1.26 Make A Difference?

At the end of the day, I go through a routine that is probably similar to yours. Wallet on the desk, receipts off to the side, keys away and coins into a change cup. Is this much different than your routine? Tonight while emptying my pockets and putting the change in the cup, I had to stop and think about some things.

The coins in my pocket tonight added up to $1.26. I realized that the change in my pocket is not as important as it use to be. In fact I hardly ever even count it, I just put it in the cup. When the cup fills up, I empty it into a better can (about the size of a large coffee can). And when it fills, I bring it to the credit union for deposit.

Throughout the day, I think very little about the change in my pocket. My day starts with no coins. If I pay cash, the change goes into my pocket. If there is a second cash purchase, there is no attempt to find the correct change. The new coins go into my pocket. I don't have many cash transactions during the course of the day, so the change in my pocket at the end of the day is probably less than $2. I can't remember the last time I hunted through my pockets for money because I had no other money. So here is where I going with this.

If I don't need this change today, maybe it can be used in a more constructive way. Maybe I can give it to someone in need, or to a charity. So that is the plan. The change in my pocket will now have a new purpose. It will be a daily reminder that I can always give to others, even if it is in the small things.

The $1.26 will not make a BIG difference, but it can make A difference.

In looking at my pocket change tonight I noticed the back of the penny is different, when did this happen?

My Dad saved that change. At home it was always worth $100+ when I came home from College (yes, he shared!).

He also had a drawer at the office where he was a College Physics Professor. When he retired, the drawer he slid his change into (opened just a slit for 40+ years) was worth thousands.

It adds up.

So many of us do similar tasks such as the coin drop. The day my granddaughter was born we open her a college fund starting at $10K. On May 18, she turned 5 and with just the change and interest she has now accumulated $16,486.52. It sounds good but there is only 13 years left to build that up to something meaningful. I cannot believe that 5 years went by so fast, just a blink of an eye.
