Living Green in Key West

recycle key westIn Key West we are believers in “Green Living and Energy Education” - - spelled GLEE.  It is easy to be reminded of the gifts of nature and the responsibility to protect and preserve them when living in this paradise of Key West.  GLEE was created as a not-for-profit organization in 2005 with a mission to promote sustainable actions through waste reduction, efficient and renewable energy, and the conservation of water and land resources.

I appreciate the many educational and special events hosted by GLEE each year in the Florida Keys especially the Green Living Expos.  These Expos are held on different keys during the year and draw over 2000 people daily to attend workshops and view exhibits of green goods, services and agencies.  Here in Key West the Green Living Expo was last held at the Botanical Gardens and featured organic food, beer, wine and a Recycled Runway fashion show.  Workshops were held on topics such as green cleaning products, self-watering planters, and sprout growing.  Look here to see some scenes of last year’s Key West Green Living Expo.  Details for the 2011 expo will be available later in the summer.

One GLEE program that promotes protection of our environment in Key West is the Green Living Awards.  These awards are presented annually to recognize individuals, agencies, and businesses that have made the most strides in the progress of sustainable measures in the Keys.  Another program is The Keys’ Sustain-Ability Program (KSAP) which holds quarterly green-themed educational meetings for policymakers and municipal staff.

We have a wonderful community garden in Key West that was planted by GLEE volunteers in 2008.  The garden is watered with collected rainwater, and nourished with compost.  The garden has produced hundreds of pounds of organic food and holds workshops that are open to both individuals and student groups.  These workshops are so popular that there is now a waiting list!

The Key West “Green Drinks” meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Finnegans Wake.  “Green Drinks” is an informal meeting of people who are interested in sustainability and green efforts. This group is actually part of an international movement that brings people together who share an interest in preserving the environment.

I am proud of the environmental efforts of our Key West residents.  Although we have a carefree lifestyle with much sun and fun, we do not take this paradise for granted.  We residents of Key West are serious about preserving our piece of paradise so that it is available for many generations to enjoy in the future.

This lifestyle of Key West fun and Key West “GLEE” is a perfect combination.  I am ready to assist you with great options to make Key West your perfect combination.  Give me a call today.  Margarita Villoch: 305-304-8505.
