Memorial Weekend ~ What We Are SUPPOSED to Remember!

Real Estate Agent with Granville, Newark, Heath, Buckeye Lake & all of Central Ohio

It's the start of a holiday weekend, the weather forecast is great, I've got hot dogs for a bonfire, plants for the garden, cocktails for sipping and we're ready to enjoy! I'm sure we're not alone, there's a lot of cookouts planned where they'll be a lot of celebrating, eating, drinking and laughing.

There are a lot of holidays that I consider to be non-holidays or "Hallmark" holidays, but this isn't one of them. This is a time to remember those who gave their lives to protect our rights in this country and acknowledge those who HAVE and STILL ARE willing to give their own life for their country.

My uncle fought in Vietnam, my father-in-law was in the Navy, I have several clients who are in various branches of the military, my niece is the Army Reserves, a very good real estate agent friend has a son on the front line in Afghanistan RIGHT NOW, and my future son-in-law is in the Navy (recently finished boot camp and now in school learning his trade).

A few years ago, I went on a field trip with my son to Washington DC. If you've ever visited something beyond words, you'll know what I mean when I say pictures don't do it justice. Do you remember your first visit to the ocean, the Grand Canyon or Vegas? You'd seen pictures, but everything is much bigger than you could ever have imagined! That's the way Arlington Cemetery is. I took a few photos, but I could have taken 100 and never got the same headstone twice.

THINK. Think about what has been sacrificed for you.

Yes, my father served in the Korean War.  It is one that many people forget, but it happened.  A moment of silence Monday to honor all Veterans would be a good thing.

Great article and a good reminder as to why we celebrate Memorial Day.  Thanks for sharing and your pictures tell a good story of just how much has been sacrificed for us.

Tracie, great post. My late Father served in Japan during the second world war. I miss him and laud his service.

Tracie, this is what is all about.  Yes, barbecues and fun.  But, let's not forget the families who have sacrificed their loved ones for our freedom and safety.  Thanks.
