Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands in Boynton Beach and all of our friends there need your help!!

Green Cay

We were on our morning walk when a friend alerted us to an article in today's Sun-Sentinel that Green Cay along with 2 other Nature Centers my face closings or scale-backs due to budget cuts.

Since last year we've seen shortened hours for the Nature Center.  No longer open on Sundays, when most families would like to visit the Center... it will now be closed Sunday, Monday and Saturday!  This may be just until Labor Day but why not keep it open on the weekends and closed during the week?!

The blame goes to our struggling economy and past county spending (not going to go there with this post.. don't get me started on waste!)

Green Cay offers so much for so many different groups: teachers can bring their students to the Nature Center to learn and experience Florida wildlife just minutes away from their homes; photographers are here 7 days a week to document the birds, alligators, sunsets and sunrises; retirees love this safe place to walk, meet friends and enjoy the outdoors; and visitors can come here to learn about our eco-system and see what every visitor to Florida comes to see:  the alligator.

How can you help?

1.  Become a Friend of Green Cay      A family can join for as little as $35 a year.  There are also corporate memberships available.

2. Volunteer at the Nature Center.

3. Adopt an animal - no you won't have to take home an alligator... the money does go to help care for animals in the exhibit gallery.

4. Write or call and give your support to County Commissioner Burt Aaronson who represents the area including Green Cay.

Kathy - Green Cay looks like quite the center!  Shame to hear about hour cutbacks...you'd think while kids are on Summer Vacation, they'd add more days.....

Look at YOU, Missy!  What absolutely fantastic pictures.  We need to start (learn?) to watermark our photos.  Yours are just incredible!

Sharon-you're exactly right.  So many times we've wanted to take visitors there but the Center was closed.

Mimi- Thank you Mimi.   I can put my name on the bottom via Picasa (email me if you don't know how!) but I was in a hurry this a.m.  I was out there this morning and it was H&H (hot and humid).

H & H ~ it is why I live in CO ;)  I got a new computer and have not downloaded Picasa yet.  Almost afraid to with 37,000 pictures on my computer.  Is there a way to watermark in Picasa? I may have to bite the bullet

What a shame.  I know how much you love the center!  Doesn't make sense at all that they are closing on weekends???

We should all support these areas in our communities. It would be a shame to lose them.

Mimi-be glad you were there today.. terrible muggy here.  I'll email you to tell you how to do the watermark.

Sharon- makes absolutely no sense!  I've emailed the commissioner and will see what happens.

Janice-It's unbelievable how many people go out to Green Cay.  I've been there late in the afternoon and the parking lot is packed.
