THE SWIFTSURE
begin today, Saturday, May 28

The Swiftsure International Yacht Race is always a great weekend to watch and track the boats online.

The Swiftsure Race is named because the Swiftsure Bank is the furthest point of the race. The HMS Swiftsure was a Royal Navy boat of the 1870 - 1908 period, however, the earliest ship of that name was was involved in action against the Spanish Armada in 1588!

The first recorded sailboat racing in the Victoria area took place in the late 1850's between boats of the Royal Navy and the early colonists. By 1930 six boats competed in the race from Cadboro Bay at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, and around the entrance to the Juan de Fuca Strait.

Nowadays, there are 4 races, the longest being the Swiftsure Lightship Classic. The weather today is mild, but of course the sailors are hoping for "good winds". There is great challenges to these races and for all of us who enjoying sailing it's a wonderful annual weekend event.

Good Luck to all entrants!

Hi Li,

You're right, the spinnakers look beautiful in light winds. It's always fun to go down to Ogden Point to watch the boats.

David - amazing how in all those colourful sails I do not see any duplicates ..... It certainly makes it easier to follow your favourite at a distance

Hi Kathy - light winds (too light for most sailors) and sun for the races made for a beautiful day on the water. Sailing with a full colourful spinnaker billowing out is fun, and yes, easy to spot favourites.

David,

Well that's a very colorful sight with all those full spinnakers.  Reminds me a little of the balloon festival in Albuquerque, NM.

Incidentally, did you see the article in the Wall Street Journal about Vancouver real estate?

Hi Lloyd,

Thanks for your comment. The balloon festival in Aluquerque sounds like a fun place to take photos! Yes, I saw the article in the Wall Street Journal. I like the comment that Vancouver prices are "frothy". I must say that Vancouver  real estate prices are higher than those of Victoria, but both cities have lots of Chinese investors and families looking for commercial and residential properties.
