The Secret Garden - Afternoon Tea in Vancouver, B.C.

The Secret Garden teahouseWho doesn't enjoy the wonderful tradition of Afternoon Tea?  We recently had a lovely day visiting the Kerrisdale area for a little shopping, girl talk and tea.  My mum was over visiting from Vancouver Island, so my sister and I rounded up our teenage daughters, and we made an outing of it.  First stop were the various little boutiques and food shops along 41st, where we found all sorts of unusual items to purchase.  Yes, I even picked up a few unusual accessories for my Home Staging business.

Of course, shopping works up an extreme thirst, so at noon we visited The Secret Garden, a lovely, little oasis in the shopping jungle, for a full on British Afternoon Tea.  The first taxing decision was to decide what kind of tea to order.  The Secret Garden boasts 40 different types of tea.  I ordered the Creamy Earl Grey tea.  Delightful. Next, up came a lovely 3-tiered china serving plate, overflowing with tiny, delicate sandwiches, tarts, cakes and of course, scones with jam and Devon clotted cream.

If you don't have time to leisurely feast on these delicacies, you can also order take out goodies from the glass case section.  The Secret Garden is located at 5559 West Boulevard, Vancouver, B.C.  Here's a photo of (left to right) my niece, Emma, my Mum, and my daughters Dominique and Madeleine.  Oops, I should have taken the photo before we'd polished off the scrumptious Afternoon Tea!

Hi Sally,

Beautifully done localism on this one. And a great photo of the generations to treasure.

Lynda - Thanks so much.  Well, my mum is British, so the teapot was never far behind, growing up.  We seem to have passed on the love of tea to our girls.  It's wonderful when we can all get together.

Phil - This was a fun post to put together.  You should have seen the girls' eyes roll when I first suggested we go for afternoon tea.  However, once they were out, they had a great time.

Sally, wonderful tradition. Love the 3-tier plates with all the yummy things on them. I still can't understand how for example coffee can be a "drive through".. Afternoon tee or coffee is ritual, even small social event. It is great that you have this charming place around to enjoy.

Anna - I couldn't agree with you more.  They seem to have the coffee/tea ritual all worked out in Europe.  The French and Italians love their cafes, where you can socialize, people watch and enjoy your lattes/cafe au lait in a calm, enjoyable atmosphere.  Our North American world is too rushed.  We need to slow down and smell the coffee!

Roger - That would be wonderful to spend an afternoon at The Secret Garden with you.  I'm sure if I told them my "American" friend was visiting, they would find a coffee pot somewhere for you!

Sally -- living in Ireland, I found that tea-drinking is indeed an art all its own.  The ritual is practically sacred.  Your stop at the Secret Garden with your lovely family looks like a lot of fun!

Maureen - What a wonderful life experience to live in Ireland - it sounds so romantic.  I bet they had beautiful tea houses over there, too.  I'm sure it's the same in Ireland, but when we visited my mum and dad's family in England, they would serve such strong tea that the spoon would practically stand upright in the cup!  Nothing like the watered down weak liquid they call tea here!
