Hi Kathy,

We grow them for a short period each year.  We'll get usually one crop out of them and then it gets too hot here.  I love em!!!

One crop is great.  So many things grow well in CA. Enjoy them while you can!

DeeDee  - that is such a cool picture of an artichoke plant! I never knew what the plant itself actually looked like - it's huge and very pretty!

DeeDee,  I'm amazed at the plant.  I've always enjoyed eating them but never thought about how the plant would look.

Hi DeeDee,

I have never seen an artichoke plant before.  Very interesting!  Reminds of how unusual an asparagus plant is too.

I grew one of these in Orange County . . . Newport Beach, if you can believe it. The plant just kept growing bigger and bigger and bigger. It was July, and the plant was immense. But no artichokes. I couldn't understand where or how they grew, and this was before the age of Internet, so it wasn't like I could look it up online. Every day I stared at this plant in my garden. Then, finally one day in late August, I spotted a tiny little artichoke buried in the leaves. I was so excited. And then I moved at the end of August, and left the plant behind.
