Even When It Is FREE, You Can't Please Everyone

On Saturday, our office hosted an Open House for the Harleysville community.  We gave away free hot dogs, sodas and water.  We also had a moon bounce, ring toss and mini golf set up for the kids.  We gave away American flags and patriotic stickers.  Then the Harleysville Country Fair Days Parade went by our office on Main Street, so everyone at our open house had a perfect viewing spot for the parade.

We gave away 650 hot dogs!  At most times, the platters were overflowing with hot dogs and no one had to wait for one.  However, there was a moment or two where the platters were empty and the agents from our office were busy grilling and making up fresh platters.  But we never ran out of hot dogs, we grilled them and served them until the crowd was satisfied and had as many as they wanted.

Would you believe we had a man complain that he had to wait for a hot dog?

(And I assure you his wait was less than a minute.)

So yes, we had a grown man complain very loudly about having to wait for a hot dog.  It definitely irritated some people nearby and a woman challenged the man and said, "But don't you think this is nice that these people do all this and give away free food?"  His response...

"Well hot dogs are about the cheapest thing you could possibly give away."

So, even on a beautiful Saturday morning with the fun and sense of community surrounding this guy, he still found reason to be miserable.  Moral of the story....  You can't please everyone.

Lisa, this is such a sad statement.  Hopefully he was the only bad apple in the whole bunch.

There is always one in every crowd. It's the few with the big mouth rude that we here the most. The other 99% are left unheard.

Lisa, whatever it was that was pushing on this guy to make him act that way, it wasn't about you or the event or the hotdog.  We aren't going to know what it was...maybe his spouse just left him or his house is getting foreclosed next month or his child is in a drug rehab facility.  We just never know why people behave badly.

HOWEVER, I know absolutely, his bad behavior wasn't about a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g on the surface where you could see it and it wasn't about that hot dog.

Thanks for sharing.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Pathetic little man.  He probably complains about the food when he goes to a restaurant too, and you know what they do to your food when you complain about it :)

Too bad that the disgruntled are the most vocal...kind of like nothing travels faster than bad word of mouth.  I'm in agreement with Judith...his problem probably runs way deeper than the wait for the hot dog.  Then again, some people just thrive on being crabby pattys. Your effort was probably greatly appreciated by the other 649 guests!

You just can't please everyone!  This man has to live with himself everyday, at least you only had to interact with him for that one moment!

Mike, I know you should never open the fridge in a vacant home.

Some people are just difficult to please, anyone in a service business has learned that.

What a great  thing to do. Don't dwell on it. Think of the other 600 people that enjoyed it.

Some people complain about everything.  I've known a few people like that.  You could hand them a check for $1 million and they would still complain.  It's sad.

I agree with Judith, #3, .... your office did a very nice thing for the community.... this man was just irritated by something or somebody...not the event!

What's even worse is when that someone calls 911 to complain, which happened here in San Diego a few weeks ago. Some people are just plain grouchy, others are stupid, and some are grouchy and stupid.

But he did eat the hot dog---AND he probably put lots of mustard and relish on it too!  This is just too bizarre to figure out.  He truly must have been having a bad day and wanted some company in his misery!~

Lisa - there's one in every bun bunch! Like it's not enough that he's getting a free meal, he has to complain he had to wait one minute! Can you imagine living with someone like this?! Hope you didn't "accidentally" drop his hot dog on the ground before serving it to him-hahahaha!

Sandi, There is always one.

Jeff & Jane, It is funny how when I think about that event, that one guy sticks out in my mind.

Judith, You are spot on correct.  I know it had nothing to do with us.

Mike, Can you imagine if he walks around with this attitude all the time?

Melba, Yes, I think you are right; his problems run deeper than needing a hot dog at that very moment.

Karin, I am so glad I am not married or related to that man.  I would have to get divorced.

Paul, It is so true in our business and how unreasonable a client can be at times.  We deal with all types all the time.

Sandi, Everyone else did and some jumped to our defense so that is what we need to focus on.

Donna, Like the people who got a brand new car from Oprah and then complained because she didn't pay the taxes so they could keep the car?

Rebecca,  Why bother coming to the open house?  Maybe he didn't want to be there....

Eric,  I have heard of people calling 911 over ridiculous stuff like that.  Hope they pay a steep fine for that nonsense.

Pat,  He was so counter to the very day and the surroundings.  On a weekend when we are honoring the ultimate sacrifices men and women gave to our country.  "I want my hot dog now!"

Kristine,  LOL, I couldn't believe he had the nerve to still take a hot dog. C'est la vive.
