Take your own advice, Counselor...You wouldn't refer a Real Estate Attorney for that DUI.

My brother is a hot shot Dallas attorney.  I always love when friends will tell me they saw his name mentioned in "Texas Monthly," "D Magazine," newspapers or other publications.  He makes the lists...Rising Star, Best Under 40, etc., etc.  He's built his practice defending mostly white collar criminals and people who get caught with the wacky tobacky. He's definitely made a name for himself.

Ask him about what you should do if you get a DUI and you won't find anyone to give you a better answer.  Ask him about what to do if someone tries to claim 3 acres of your land as his own, he won't know exactly but can give you some law he remembered learning way back in law school.  When someone asks him about family law or divorce, he inevitably answers, "I'm a lawyer, but I don't practice that kind of law. It's like asking a foot doctor to fix your heart."

So, today, he texted me:

Brother: How do I search for foreclosures in Dallas?

Me: You ask your realtor to set up a search for you.

Brother: Is there a website I can go to?

Me: Ask your realtor to set up a keyword search for you for REOs, HUDs and Short Sales.

Brother: Can you give me a password?

Me: Funny guy. No I can't. Plus, I don't subscribe to a Dallas area MLS.

Brother: What's a HUD?  What's a short sale?  (remember this is all text)

So, I call him.

Me: Hey, you need an agent who specializes in short sales and foreclosures.

Brother: We have an awesome agent.  He's helped us with 3 houses.

Me: He's helped you with 3 houses in Lakewood. I know for a fact he's a Luxury Home Specialist. Does he specialize in short sales as well? Would he know how to go about making a short sale offer?  Don't you want someone who specializes in selling distressed properties?

Brother: Yes. Do you think I could get someone who could get me a good investment?

Me: I'm sure of it.  Ask your agent first what he knows about short sales and REOs.  In the meantime, I'll send you some names and make some referrals. You can interview several to see who will be able to help you with that type of investment.

Brother: Great!  Thanks.

After I hung up, I thought about how he always makes it a point to tell people that he is a defense attorney and can't always help with just any legal problem.  It was nice to be able to be able to give him his own advice!

I think I'll start looking for that Dallas foreclosure/short sale specialist right here on Active Rain...

Laurie, I get that all the time.  Just because you're an expert at one thing doesn't mean you are an expert at everything.

Great advice. And never a better time to invest in real estate in this area. If you'll let me add, be sure that the agent you refer to him also understand real estate investment. Not just on the buying end. Some agents (as you know) have no clue about real estate as an investment.

I absolutely love it!!! Great point too because we are Professionals and Lawyers are Professionals. People always ask what do you specialize in as a Lawyer, but never RE.Therefore, RE has Specialty areas too> They ask us when we are signing up for our MLS Membership, Designations and various website auto FILL (you can usually only choose 4). We should remind consumers as well... Even Doctors! They wouldn't go to a GYN if they had a problem with their foot! ;) SUGGEST>>

June: And, I don't think it's smart to try to specialize in everything.

Loreena: I completely agree with you on that one.

Lauren: I just loved being able to one up him!  He's usually the one upper.  Some agents try to specialize in everything. How can they?  If you don't know what you're doing, refer it to someone who does.
