Honesty-Still the Best Policy

How many of you recall the addage "Honesty is the best policy"?  It was true when it was first uttered generations ago, and is still a true, althought too often neglected, concept today.

For those of you that follow the relationship centric sales ideaology of Dale Carnegie and his How to Win Friends and Influence People rhetoric, you may recall the prevalence of integrity in his tips to building a successful relationship:

• Give honest, sincere appreciation
• Become genuinely interested in other people
• Make the other peson feel important - and do it sincerely
• Try to honestly see things from the other person's point of view
• Begin with praise and honest appreciation

See the pattern here?

We are all human, and human nature stresses self-survival.  It is when the survival instinct and moral charcter collide that we are faced with a most difficult decision...stretch the truth...or be brutally honest even at our own peril.  I challenge you to look back on all of those occassions in your life in which perhaps complete honesty wasn't exercised, and evaluate the outcome.  If you analyze the data I can assure you that you will find that honesty is truly, the best policy.

I found a nugget of wisdom in a fortune cookie years ago, that I keep near my desk to this day:

"Your priciples mean more to you than any wealth or success".  Think about it!  Do your principles guide your actions, or do your actions determine your priciples?

In your daily life you will commonly encounter individuals that aren't beholden to the same level of integrity as you are.  Don't allow their actions to influence yours.  Hold the higher ground, stick unwaveringly to your values, and you will acheive greater success and happiness.
