Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage South

It must be summer.....lightning bugs are everywhere!  I have vivid memories of them on summer evenings when I was a kid.  We lived in an area that had plenty of trees and it seemed like there were millions of them!  As the sun began to go down you would begin to see them rising up out of the grass and then a flash here and there....and more and more of a light show as it got darker.  We had mayonnaise jars with holes punched in the tops so we could catch some of these poor critters and watch them close up.  We let them go before we had to go inside and get ready for bed.  I can even remember the stinky smell on my hands after handling them.

Here is an interesting video about those little flashers!

Ann, That just brought back a few memories for me! I live in the NW now, but lived in Chicago until 6 years old. Caught them in a mayonnaise jar too! Thanks

My oldest child wrote a paper about fireflies/lightening bugs when she was in grade school.  She became facinated with the word Bioluminescence.  She walked around the house for days saying that word over and over and over, almost like a song.  Bioluminescense, bioluminescense, bioluminescense.

Thanks for the memories!

Ann, I have never seen lightening bugs! How fun that must be to see them flitting around on a warm summer night.  And, Judith, love the word Bioluminescense.

ANN - You are so lucky to still have those little creatures to enjoy. We in southern Texas do not any more. Someone said it was due to all the pesticides sprayed on the crops. But I really don't know what did away with them. There is a site call to reports seeing them. Yeah it is that bad. I am glad that I was able to enjoy them as a child.

Ann, Reading this post reminds me of the one and only time my parents took their six children on vacation … which was back east where I saw my first and only firefly! We had jars too. I remember dropping my jar and it broke. Interesting video too! Thanks.

I guess I was just a scaredy cat as a kid. Well not exactly a scaredy cat, but I didn't play with bugs.  Guess I wasn't a normal kid huh?
