The day after Memorial Day…

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Respect Realty LLC 200311024

Memorial day for some is nothing more than a day off work, others like myself it is a day to remember those soldiers that have falling in the line of duty for my freedom. We are lucky here in Portland to have the Willamette National Cemetery, a cemetery dedicated to thousands of veterans from all wars. There are over 130,000 presently buried at Willamette National Cemetery.

Willamette National Cemetery

Now, what is an awesome site is on Memorial Day weekend, every one of those graves is given a flag. That is a lot of work and what is also a lot of work is picking up every one of those flags, this is where my family comes in to the story.

I want my kids to understand how many people from our local community actually fought for them and their freedom and never take it for granite. So today, my daughters youth group and my son’s Cub Scout troop are meeting at the cemetery to help pick up those 130,000 flags.

To me, this is a reminder to us that our freedom isn’t free and it also gives my family and I a chance to say “Thank You” to every grave we pick up a flag from later today. Today is not just another day, it is another day of freedom, and I don’t plan to forget and either should you!

Memorial Day a day to remember those who so love our country they gave their lives. No one volunteers to die, no one wants to die, but like one who went before they so loved us that they willingly faced death to save us.

Todd, at Arlington, troops stationed at Fort Mead placed 300,000 flags exactly one foot in front of each stone in three hours.  The flags are a really moving sight.

Great thoughts as you set a wonderful example for your children.  It does help to know "why we do what we do."

Great job Todd, it is so important the we keep passing that message along to our youngsters. So many people have fought and died to make this country what it is today. Still the best country in the world

That's a great lesson for the kids.  What happens to the flags then?  Are they saved for Memorial Day next year?
