Here's an honest account of some of the frustrations associated with being in real estate. I love my job, but there's always things that can knock us down. It's good to be prepared though with a clever retort or just know how to deal with a situation such as this. I like to role play in my mind what I would say if presented with this scenario.
Sat the open house on Bravo in Rancho El Dorado. It was a nice quiet day with a only about 6 visitors. Not bad for a Thursday. Definitely met some people who were serious about buying and not just kicking the tires. Kicking the tires, so to speak, is not a bad thing. It’s a good thing, but at the same time I wonder if the people who want me to kick tires with them realize that people in my profession don’t make an hourly wage. I am not being negative here. But OK, if I was, then I would say the following. Yes, our realtors probably average about $2500 - $3000 per deal and yes we make it look easy. But what I think the world out there forgets is that we pay for our own gas, our own medical insurance, our own life insurance, and our own taxes. Yes, we look sharp and we have knowledge about the market, but we have laid a foundation of sacrifice to get there. We are not losers, we are metaphoric brick layers. And sometimes I hear from a buyer that: “Well you’re getting paid a nice commission on this,” and every time I hear that, it makes me have that queasy knot in my stomach and the stress center point in my head needs to be rubbed by my fingers because that funny ha ha statement makes me want to puke. Do I say, “Hey Salary dude, you need to be thankful I am asking your company to produce more widgets because I need it and if I didn’t, you wouldn’t have a job, so cut me some of your check will you?”
Moral of the story: While I am truly thankful to blessed at having the buyer’s confidence and trust in me, I also want it to be made acutely aware that the income I earn OFF of you IS NOT as big as you think.
