Dan O’Malley is a face I have not seen for maybe 5 and a half years that showed up at our doorstep today on his black Harley; really, he is a close friend to Karen and I did not get to know him at that time in Korea mainly because I was preparing myself for the great transplant of my family from Asia back to America and also because I was usually drunk at the bar where he too was more than likely alcohol impaired. But that’s cool. I just remembered him as a friendly happy face in the myriad of faces etched across the black canvass of my mind in that time of my life.
Well, he’s here for two days and just moved back from the free and simple, yet luxuriously rich lifestyle one can have in Korea. When I asked him last night why he would give up the money, 6 hour work weeks, a paid apartment, 5.5 months of vacation that would enable him to travel the world (which he did), he simply gave a direct unfettering reply: “It was time to come home.” I will tell you that I completely respect that.
Time to come home? Yes it is something I am sure that burns in the minds of many ex-patriats abroad, the needling seed that says, “Why are you still here? “ and that family and friends back in America miss you and the thing you went to college for, your career pursuits, the making of it in America, that is the burn. It once burned in me and that is why I came back from such a wonderful wonderland experience that I call Korea.
And, no I did not leave it all back there in South Korea, that exotic orient. No I brought back me a beautiful Korean wife, Carey, and I have been blessed to have my mother in law here as well as Carey’s brother and his family. So I still get my daily dosage of Korea and feel happy to have this pill I can swallow amidst the wailing hustle and bustle, road raged, and success driven state, called My America.
We had fun last night talking like George W as we called ourselves, Mericans. Cuz that’s what we are. Y’all have a good night.
