Hurricane Season Officially Begins Today...Be Prepared!
Well Folks, Hurricane Season is officially here as of Today, June 1st, 2011. And it begins with a tropical system just of the eastern coast. Hurricanes are nothing to laugh at, but fortunately, lots of warning time usually accompanies them, and having an evacuation plan in force is a DARN GOOD IDEA!
Every year, my family hauls the emergency kit out of the garage in May. We check batteries in each flashlight and in the weather radio, we make sure our medical supplies are good to go, and we confirm that there are plenty of candles in case of power outages. We also stock up on LOTS of water, non-perishable food items and propane for the camp stove....Just in case. In our kit, we also keep a deck of cards and some other small games to play. We pack an emergency suitcase with enough clothes for a long weekend in the mountains (where we go if an evacuation is in order). We backup all important documents regarding Homeowner's, Auto, Wind & Hail, and Medical Insurance. We also keep backups of all family photos (do not want to lose those). We line each cat kennel with a blankie, make sure we have the pets current on vaccines (keep a copy of records) and we even have a travel litter box! It is also important to know hotels that allow pets, should you decide to evacuate for a storm. If you live or work on the island of Bogue Banks, Make sure you have your Re-Entry pass...you may not be allowed to enter without it!
This post is not to frighten anyone, but to make folks more aware about the importance of being prepared for the season. Stay posted on the Tropics and pay attention to watches and warnings. Having lived in coastal areas most of my life, I have seen what a Hurricane can do, and I refuse to take any chances. My family and I hit the road with our pets, our emergency gear and our suitcases for any storm over a Catogory I....I can replace my house and the items in the house, but I can't replace my family!
My favorite site for staying informed about Hurricanes and Tropical Storms is The National Hurricane Center and my favorite Hurricane Tracking Site is US Navy.
Thanks to Lenn Harley for inspiring this post with your comments this morning....Better to be prepared!
