Going through Washington, D.C. to visit friends, we were driving down a beautiful street when we happened to see this tree with two large bumps.
I did a Google search on "tree bumps" and found the following information: The bumps are called a "burl," a swollen area of callous tissue that sometimes forms on trees for unknown reasons. If the bump is solid and just looks like the tree has grown a little tumor, it is a burly tree. Burls are reactions to some sort of attack, possibly a bug injecting a minor toxin or a pathogen that the tree is attempting to isolate from causing wider trouble. But, if the bump is open and oozing, there's a problem.
There is a large red band around the tree so I am guessing the tree will be cut down or perhaps the bumps removed or treated. The tree was tall and beautiful and hopefully the city will just remove the bumps if possible.
