Friday Fotos, Large Tree Bumps

By
Real Estate Agent WV0026375

Going through Washington, D.C. to visit friends, we were driving down a beautiful street when we happened to see this tree with two large bumps.

tree bumps

I did a Google search on "tree bumps" and found the following information:  The bumps are called a "burl," a swollen area of callous tissue that sometimes forms on trees for unknown reasons.  If the bump is solid and just looks like the tree has grown a little tumor, it is a burly tree.  Burls are reactions to some sort of attack, possibly a bug injecting a minor toxin or a pathogen that the tree is attempting to isolate from causing wider trouble.  But, if the bump is open and oozing, there's a problem.

There is a large red band around the tree so I am guessing the tree will be cut down or perhaps the bumps removed or treated.  The tree was tall and beautiful and hopefully the city will just remove the bumps if possible.

Wood turners prize these pieces as the wood grain produces interesting figure on items turned from burl woods.

Hi Rebecca,

What an interesting story!  I don't think I have ever seen a Tree Bump before....  I hope they are able to remove it before there is further damage to the tree.  I certainly hope they don't have to cut it down!

Dear Rebecca -
I love burl wood when it is set into a table top.
The colors and movement in the wood is amazing.

Have a happy day -
Lynn

I have a tree in the backyard that has them.  However, it was the result of a tree house being on it which has since been removed.

Rebecca,

Bumps like that on any living thing are causes for concern and should be investigated. I'm glad you took the time to research it to find out. I have the greatest respect for people like you who do that. Education is power and puts you ahead of the pack!

Rebecca, thanks for teaching me something new today! I didn't realize that this is how "burl wood" came to be...an excellent example of making lemonade out of lemons in the tree world! :)

Furniture or artistic pieces made from the burls are often highly prized and very expensive.  It makes such an interesting grain in the wood especially if the grain is tight.. great value.
