They Didn't Have Proms When I Was In Eighth Grade

Home Inspector with Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC 3380-000723

AT 14 I was finishing 8th grade and moving to 9th.  In those days we were in "junior high," and stayed in the same building for 9th grade.  We were in "high school," but it didn't so much feel like it.

Now 9th grade, high school, happens in the high school building.

And 8th graders apparently need a "send off" dance, a prom, with food and dress up, make up, manicure, hair and you name it, just like we had in high school.

Some things change, and some things don't.

But with coupons and "special" shopping, we got off cheaper than you might imagine!

She is already talking about the "next" prom...

Like I said, some things change, and some things don't.

I can deal with it.

If this is your first time through the middle school, high school date experience - Hold on to your hat. Things have ratcheted up quite a bit since I was in high school Jay.

She looks beautiful.  I hope she had a great time.  We had 9th grade as part of the high school.  We didn't have a middle school dance.

Seems like everything is on a fast track these days Jay. Your daughter looks beautiful and you should probably "inspect" her date before they head out. Have a great weekend.

Fourth time Tom.  I have a high school reunion of my own this fall, 400th...

She thought so too Debbie!  Of course I did too...  She had a very nice time and came home singing.

Randy - no date.  She cannot date until 16, and then only double dating.  I doubt anyone would have passed my inspection anyway.

Our school had 8-12 in the same building, but we didn't have early year proms.  Just 11 & 12.  I hope she had a great time, and Randy is right, I hope you did a pat down, made him fill out an application, did a background check, implanted a GPS chip in his jacket, etc.  She's beautiful.  I'm so glad I only had boys. I couldn't take the stress of letting my daughter out of the house.  8-)

Good morning, Jay. They didn't have proms when I was in the 8th grade either. Come to think of it, the only thing we had was the JR/SR prom. Oh well. Things have certainly changed...

Had anyone showed up, Mike, he would have been turned away!  The 16 rule stands firm!

Michael - too many proms!  It's all about the money, I guess.

My "prom" over 50 years ago, my FATHER escorted me and my date met us there as the fathers walked into the gym with thei girls * all girls school * and then gave their hands to their dates.  I remember my father was DASHING in a white summer tuxedo jacket that he owned and I have no idea what my date was wearing....I MADE my own prom dress and had shoes dyed to match * probably cost $50 was a HOUSEHOLD event with my sister and my mother and photos with my father

Don't think I had proms either in the 8th. I had never attended one, was not my interest at that in life.

I remember dances in middle school, but not proms.  I also don't remember graduating from every grade, but it seems to be necessary to boost the egos of the little ones these days.  I understand the prom more than the graduations.  BTW, love the dress.  She looks great!

Wallace - we got out of the whole thing for less than $50!  That sounds like quite the prom, with dads giving away their daughters!

S&D - I haven't heard all the story, so I don't know how her dress faired with the other kids' dresses!

Thanks Andrea.  I had her nearly crying before she left, saying that the school emailed us and wanted her mom and dad to demonstrate a fox trot on the dance floor and that we would be teaching proper "slow dancing" to the group!  Her face looked like I had had her condemned to hell...

Sheila - the more they change, the more they stay the same!

Tish - yes, but read above what I said to Andrea about what I did to her just before she left!  So much for guidance!

Don - we had one in 11th and 12th grades.  Not before!  Just dances.

Thanks Chris Ann - this was Pennington School's send off for the summer.  It was very nice - dinner and a dance.

Chris - I don't remember how many years it took me to get through JUNIOR kindergarden...  well, we didn't have a senior one in those days!

Thanks Charlie.  Not my first rodeo, but so far the most difficult one.

But we could beat rocks and sticks and coconuts on the ground, loudly, so we could all dance to it Steve.  You do remember, right...?
