Fotos On the Fly – Water Rescue Along the Hudson…

It sounds obvious – with a river like the Hudson River hugging the western border of our county -  that we have to have a significant police and rescue presence along the river – but I seldom gave that presence much thought.  Recently there have been a couple of “jumpers” – people threatening to jump off the Tappan Zee Bridge.  But even then – I was more preoccupied with the plight of someone who would go over the edge like that.  I wasn’t necessarily thinking about the police presence on the river specifically.  I just assumed that “they” -whoever “they” were would try and talk that poor soul out of ending it all.   No more.    A few weeks ago I was walking on the Tarrytown River Walk – I happened along some of the police and rescue boats.  There they were – solid proof of law enforcement and rescue workers on the River…

It just goes to show you that there will always be the need for a public sector and the maintenance of infrastructure….

Hi Tim - Glad you liked the pics...

Hi Debbie - The jumpers happen apparently from time to time.  I  hear about it when my dogs are at the dog park in Sleepy Hollow. But I never thought much about what goes into dealing with issues on the water until I saw all those boats. You know it exists in NYC - look at what was unleashed when Sully Sullenberger landed that plane on the water.  But  we often just don't think about things.  Alot of people dis the public sector and the services they perform.  Sometimes we need to think about what that public sector actually DOES for us.

I liked he pictures.  It is good that there are patrols along the river.  I know I always appreciated when I have been in a boat myself along rivers and lakes here in Michigan.

Ruthmarie- I lived in Charleston for a few years and in that time there were many occasions where ppl threatened, and some who went through with, jumping off the bridge there. I had the unfortunate mispleasure of watching one such act one day and it was so incredibly disturbing and a feeling of complete and utter helplessness. Thankfully this particular man didn't succeed at taking his life because when he jumped water rescue was right there to grab him and bring him to safety. Many, many broken bones but he still had his life. Hopefully, today, he sees it as much more valuable than he did on that particular day. He'll never know how much he affected me that day and how often I still think of him and wonder if he feels better about life now than he did then. I sure hope so....

Ruthmarie- I love your Title Photo's on the Fly, I have been doing that a lot lately, Driving, Red Light take Picture...... The Tappan Zee Bridge brought  back memories when I went to school in NY State and we used to go on the Tappan Zee Bridge..... too bad that people feel so desperate and hopeless... when I think no matter how bad things are for me I always know that there are many people worse of than me hence I am grateful for what I have...

Hi Michael - I was surprised at myself about taking it so much for granted.   OF COURSE there is a whole infrastructure  there!  And we are lucky they are there...What a DUH! for me though....

Hi Margie - I think this eceonomy has increased the suicide rates.  Its very, very sad - but a sign of the times.

Hi Endre - I have a lot of friends who are near the end of their financial ropes - some are truly desperate.  Very sad times.

There have been more jumpers and threatening jumpers this year than the past 10 years.  So sad...

Our government no longer represents us.  It represents the monied elite.  They have simply destroyed and clubbed the middle class and now they are jumping off bridges.  Everything they built over the years evaporating before their eyes.  It is terribly sad and it will continue.  If things do not start going the way of "We the PEOPLE"  there may be another revolution.
