Getting Points for Comments (In More Ways Than One)

Reblogger
Real Estate Agent with Pacific Union International

Here's a post that has excellent information in it for not-so-new (like me) and the newer members of Active Rain.  I feel a bit dumb saying it but I will:  I wasn't aware that there is a minimum number of characters required for points on comments.  So thank you Craig Daniels for this valuable post...and your many others.  I subscribe to Craig's blog...and suggest others do, too.

How many times do you see a very short comment and think "I guess they didn't know there was a minimum length to get your 25 points for the comment!" We love meaningful comments! "This is an excellent post! Thank you for sharing this post." may in fact be entirely sincere by some, but it also typifies a copy/paster "I'm doing this comment JUST for the points!" type person (for more info, see Miss Manners Guide to Commenting Philosophies)

Well, let's not start counting our characters in our comments, but it does take a minimum of 50 characters in a comment to get our 25 points. (I previously relayed something that I had heard, namely that it takes 10 words or more, and while that is approximately right, it is more precisely a character count, I just now tested to confirm it!). So when you comment, you should fill up at least half a line of the commenting box (compare my red arrows in the diagram below, the 50 character point is just over half distance of comment area width).

Points are nice to get and we might as well earn them for making a comment, so make sure you are aware of this when commenting. Don't just say it was nice... tell us why and what part in particular! (and you will have no problems with points, AND you'll be making many more points in the eyes of the author!)

Points should be last on the list for reasons to post.

Gloria:  Glad you found useful information in Craig's post...I don't reblog much but this one seemed the perfect candidate.

#2:  Points aren't the biggest motivator for me...it's communication with peers and the post-reading public.   The points are a bonus...and a carrot to keep me coming back.

Kirsten...One of the first things I read when I joined Activerain was the 10 -50 rule for points The Newbie group was a great place to start.

Thanks Kirsten !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I lost count, was that 30 exclamation characters? LOL  Seriously, I don't worry about points for comments but this is good information for those who do!

Great reblog - personally I don't think you can say very much in under 50 charactors and for those just looking to get their points and write "great post" - it's a waste of time and adds no value to the post!

Mary:  I tried to count the exclamation points but I guess I need stronger reading glasses!  Reblogged 'cuz I thought others might be interested...and I hadn't known da rules.

Kristine:   I'm with you...no comments are better than meaningless comments.

I will never ever understand why anyone cares about points. All I care about is getting something out of this that brings me business.

Bill:  I agree with you that generating business is what it's all about.  If that's not the focus of our efforts as real estate agents we are soon without business!
