Renting a car?....don't use your debit card!

By
Mortgage and Lending

We have all seen many articles referring to credit scores. How to improve, how to maintain and what hurts your scores, but I have yet to hear about this one. The car rental.

It appears that most of the major car rental companies have a policy where if you use your debit card that they have the right to pull a credit report. Many are doing it and it will affect your credit score. One example I saw lowered it by 14 points just for the one credit pull! I would have thought they would just request a deposit but apparently they want a little more from you when it comes to debit cards. Avoid having your score lowered by using a credit card or confirm before using the debit card whether a credit pull will be required or not. Of course you must watch the rules for credit card use too as the fickle FICO scoring plays games with this as well.

Dale - I thought so too but was told it was not given (perhaps it was part of the rental agreement, the person involved was not told of the credit check in advance, so beware). I did check several companies and they all have specific debit card rules and they all list a credit check as a requirement.

There seems to be a great big cloud of stupid floating around up there. I hope it goes away before it rains down on me.

Sussie - Make sure and keep your umbrella handy. I don't think that cloud is going to pass any time soon.
