Procrastination - You Can Overcome It!

Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task which needs to be done -postponing until tomorrow what can be done today.  It not only affects a person's work, but also commonly involved feelings of guilt, in adequacy, self disgust, stress and depression.

Twelve Steps to Help You STOP Procrastinating:

  1. Make a task list and prioritize it - work on "A" priorities first. Abandon or delegate "C" priorities.
  2. Focus on the end goal or resulting benefits.
  3. Ten Minute Plan - tell yourself you only have to work on the task for ten minutes. Ten minutes is better than nothing and your self esteem will soar.
  4. Be prepared. Are there steps that require your attention first? Figure out what they are and work on them first.
  5. Advertise for accountability. Allow peer pressure to help motivate you to move forward on the task at hand.
  6. Give yourself rewards when you accomplish something.
  7. Divide the task in bite size pieces. How do you eat an elephant?
  8. Do something! An old proverb says "We are the vessel and God is the rudder". However, he can't direct us if we are not moving.
  9. Find out what motivates you. Are you motivated by Love, Fear, Money, Power or Survival?
  10. Keep in mind "It's never as bad as you think"
  11. Remember the word "No" never killed anyone.l
  12. Make sure you have the right equipment, tools or knowledge to complete the task.

I have found great success with #5 - it works really well for me!

Carol, I do like the "ten minute plan", use it for cleaning tasks around the house sometimes!  And #11 is really important, saying yes to everything is a quick way to get overwhelmed :)

Just what I needed Carol. I'm going to have to give the Ten Minute Plan a try, too. Once you get started it's usually easier to keep going!
