Like My Spinning Instructor Says, You Gotta Get Out of Your Comfort Zone!

Reblogger Cory Barbee
Real Estate Broker/Owner

Here is a great post about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. There are many areas of our lives that we can do this. Health, communication, relationships, business and list goes on. I think most of us know the definition of insanity. In order to keep life fun and challenging, reach outside of your comfort zone and give it your best shot. It is time to take action and dictate the results instead of reacting to the circumstances that you are given.

At 5:52 a.m. this morning my spinning instructor Tammy at the DC Ranch Village Health Club yelled, “make those legs WORK and get out of your comfort zone!”  I thought I already was, making myself attend a class that I haven’t tried in a few years!  But oh well, I turned the wheel up ¼ turn, pushed a little harder and kicked up the RPMs.  Although I had to back it down a little bit later, I thought, “I will get better at this”!

Get Out Of Your Comfort ZoneThere have been quite a number of things I’ve done along the way as a Realtor that have plopped me smack dab in the middle of an uncomfortable zone. (Blogging and being a Rainmaker newbie is one of them!) But somehow I’ve made it through and am still quite alive in this business seven years later.

If you’re a little stuck in a rut right now, maybe you might try some of these suggestions and possibly boost your business:

 1) Look outside the neighborhood. One of my out-of-town clients who found me on the internet a few years back originally had no intention of actually using me and they were pumping me for information online, as they’d planned to work with a Realtor they knew out here referred by a friend.  But when they actually met with “One-Zip-Code Sue” as they nick-named her, they found she wouldn’t really show them anything outside the neighborhood in which she lived.  They called me on me and I was able to show them a number of different options in different areas. Their purchase in DC Ranch in NortDC Ranch homesh Scottsdale resulted in a referral of about the same amount. Because “Sue” wasn’t able to get out of her comfort zone, she lost two wonderful sales!

 2) Be willing to drive the extra mile. Yes, it’s great to have a niche, but are you really going to send a buyer off to another agent just because you’ve never shown homes in a particular subdivision before?  Sometimes buyers my think they may want to live in a certain area and that’s where you start, but they find out for the amenities they want and the price range they desire, their best bet might be Verrado in Buckeye (a DMB community, same developer as DC Ranch) or Estrella Mountain Ranch in Goodyear – about 45 minutes away.  It is a BIG valley and I might drive a little more than I’d like sometimes, but you never know where those transactions are going to lead or how many referrals in which they might result.

 3) Short sales are here to stay for awhile – snuggle up to them and make friends! It still kills me that every day I hear another veteran Realtor say “I just don’t do short sales”, thinking they are too hard or just never get done. As those of us who Time to Get Off The Fencedo them know, they DO get done in most cases with a proper system, and they often are done in a more quickly than in the past. There are so many classes that can teach you how to do it the correct way and resources for legal help for your clients. If you’ve been on the fence, it may be time to give it a try!

To keep thriving in today’s real estate market, try getting out of your comfort zone. Do something new!  It may be challenging and a new learning experience, but you’ll make yourself a stronger, better, and more financially successful Realtor.
