Conciliation. Republicans and Democrats in the Oregon Legislature are considering new terms for Bend: different margins for the legislative districts in Oregon. In a recent news conference lawmakers agreed to take a closer look at these latest borders; they projected it as a plan to create an agreement for a rather intense political discussion. For years the Legislature had been unable to establish new boundaries for the districts and has sent the task to the secretary of state.
Though the boundaries are proposed, no agreement has been made for the congressional districts. The redistricting committees will be holding a public hearing on the new charted districts, followed closely by votes in both House and Senate.
The district maps are still similar to the current charts. Bend's House District 54, served by Republican Jason Conger, would shrink: it would lose Deschutes River Woods and the north end of Bend. The areas that Conger's district would be losing would be placed in the care of District 53, which is served by Republican Gene Whisnant.
