Last night as I was drifting off to sleep for the second time, this time it was my daughter who awakened me. The weather channel was showing a thunderstorm warning heading our way with possible 60 mph winds and hail.
I told her not too worry as I am not usually frightened by storms. The storm did not get bad, I believe it was above us as in north of us. However, I was unusually wide awake for this time of night....
A storm story on the weather channel caught my attention and goes as follows to the best of my memory.
The setting is at Fawcett Creek I believe in Missouri. Two families attend a church service and travel the same road home.
In one car is a mother and 11 year old daughter and two small children. The other car also has four occupants. Two children and their mother and also her father who is coincidently a passenger with them on this night because his wife decided to stay home.
The first car with mother her father and the children ends up falling into the creek and washing downstream in the raging waters. The mom who was driving attempts to open the door and the car begins to fill with water. As they are about to be overturned the car becomes lodged and each of the adults grabs a child and they make it to the top of the car and somehow manage to stay there.
Problem is, no one knows they are there.
Approximately ten minutes later the second car also falls into the creek at the same location and washes down the stream. Their car also becomes lodged in the raging waters but not as far down stream as the first car. The mother and 11 year old girl each grab a child and also manage to get on top of the car.
They decide the mother will stay on the car with the children because she is stronger than the 11 year old girl. The girl gets ahold of a branch and swings to the bank making it safely. She runs for help in the stormy darkness and finds a home protected by an electric fence. She manages to get through and to the door which is answered and a call is placed to 911. Instantly after the call for help was placed the phone lines go dead.
Emergency crews are dispatched and now there is hope.
They find the car and begin rescue operations. For some reason I am not remembering any of the details if they were shown.
But the girl who called for help says this is not her family. So rescuers search and find the other car upstream and also begin to rescue her family too.
They place a ladder out over the raging waters and someone went out on the ladder and dropped lines n just pluck the children up but had to quickly devise another way of rescuing the mom. That was by tipping the ladder down to her.
Immediately following the final rescue which was the mom of the second car the 4000 - 6000 lb culvert breaks loose creating a mudslide washing downstream toward the lodged cars.
One important note, it sounds like if you end up in a creek and can get on top of your car maybe you will be rescued.
What an amazing story with such a wonderful ending. All eight occupants of the two cars survive!
And thank you to the emergency technicians who save lives and it's all in a days work - just doin their job! We appreciate your services...!
