The Free Pool - A True Story And A Cautionary Tale.

This true tale was brought to mind by a photo I saw in Charles Buell's recent blog: Summer time---time to jump in the Pool!

His pool shot (photo) reminded me of a local incident.

Married friends of mine had kids and bought a house in a near by commuter city. The price was right, etc, etc.

Come spring they discovered a 15' deflated pool in the tall grass of the back yard. My friend , a fairly handy guy took weeks of spare time checking it out, reassembling it and making sure all the equipment was present and working. (This had been an above ground pool.)

On the Saturday that it was all ready to go, they started filling. And just in time as it was approaching the end of June and it was getting hot.

But it was slow going. They only had the one garden hose to fill it.

By noon it was only 2/3rds full so they gathered up their kids (2) and 6 of their friends who had been playing in the yard waiting for the pool to be ready and took them off to MacDonald's for lunch and left the pool slowly filling.

There certainly was no danger of it over flowing and they took their time with the kids to keep them entertained.

Then they went back home to see how close it was to full.

But....

It was gone! They couldn't see it as they drove up the street!

They got there. Parts were strewn all over the yard. The children's toy were washed up against the fence and house. The basement windows were smashed in and the basement was flooded.

The pool had burst. The kids , to say the least were dismayed.

The parents looked at each other.

They were both white as a sheet.

They were both professional ambulance drivers.

They knew how lucky they were (the children were not in that yard when the pool burst).

They didn't open the van doors. They just drove the visiting children home, brought their kids to her mothers, before coming back to start the clean up.

Reminds me of in incident when I was about 13. We had an above ground pool and we were all in it when it suddenly fell apart. It was the coolest thing we’d even seen. Lots of fun. Ah to be young and willing to have such fun again.

Robert,

That is a great story. But boy that would suck if it was your home. That is a lot of water.

Lots of fun if you were in the pool Russel, not so much if you were near by and got whammed with a wall of water.

Don, They lost a brand new washer and dryer set that had been installed in the basement. The electronic controls were fried. That plus 2 new windows made a hefty insurance claim.

Robert that would indeed be quite the mess----what a surprise to be in it at the time relaxing on an air matress only to find yourself white-water rafting.

What a situation that was. Disappointed kids, wasted water, washed out yard, still no pool. Hope it all worked out.

Good Morning Robert, thank you for the warning!  I will remember the post and the outcome if I run it on a listing.  The experience may save someone else from a bigger disaster!

Yes Charles sluicing through the back yard and in the basement window.

Well Tom it got cleaned up, fixtures and windows replaced. Insurance would not replace the pool so the kids got signed up at the local public pool.

Yes Dan. This is definitely a situation where you HAVE to look the gift horse in the mouth.

Robert, what causes that? Old vinyl that has been out in the UV rays too long? Do pools like that have an expiry date? Very thought provoking post! Thanx!

In this case Peg I don't know, I didn't see it. Vinyl does age but again this was made for the outdoors. The sellers never mentioned it.

When found by my friends it was collapsed in the tall grass. I suspect that there was a reason for that and they tried to restore it, but missed some crucial detail.

That would be a nightmare Robert, but luckily no one was hurt. I guess above ground pools aren't as simple to erect as they would seem.

Hi Malcolm. They are not especially complex but they do retain a large weight of water so the system has to work.
