Email Spam Blocker Idea

By

Anyone that uses email very much will soon get inundated with spam or junk emails.  There are plenty of spam blockers out there but one that I wish someone would create is one that blocks “subjects” not just user’s.

Many spammers have learned how to hijack people’s email accounts to push the exact same message from hundreds or thousands of users to push the same message.  I know as soon as the spammers learned about the new filters, they would just adjust their delivery yet again.

I think if Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, etc., could flag phrases or words that are used in common junk mails, these email services could then rank junk mail (a filter within a filter).

As a real estate agent in Boise, Idaho; I sort through every email I get even my spam since about once a week I find a newsletter or email that get flagged as Junk Mail that really is just a CC from someone that didn’t use their email correctly so it gets flagged as spam.

I have been getting better at using spam and junk mail filters which has helped a lot; however there is still lot’s of filtering to be done.  I would think that the email service providers would be more pro-active in sorting and not distributing the spam on their end since it wouldn’t bog down their servers.  For example, why not have names and phrases blocked similar to blocking adult sites?

Wouldn’t you be able to scan through your junk mail and spam filters if you never even say any that just had (Viagra, Cialis, Chantix, barely legal, flirt, romance, sex, enlarge, lottery,  replicas,  etc.)?

I miss a couple emails that go to my junk mail. the hard part is getting so much junk that its understandable you would miss some.

@Chuck, agreed that it is hard not to miss a few emails that were flagged as junk.  If I wasn't in the business of getting many emails from people I don't know (thanks to being the owner/broker of Progressive Realty Corporation), I would probably not feel compelled to even open my junk mail folder, but I have even found leads there that a consumer has cut and pasted four or five emails from different real estate websites and sent requests for resume's and portfolio's to each to see who responds best online.

Hi Jim - our ISP uses a pretty good spam blocker service called MailArmory that is configurable, and our e-mail program - Eudora - provides special filters that can block sublect keywords. That said, we still have to manage our blocked mail regularly to rescue those mis-categorized gems.

I'll go for the US mail spam filter lol I've often wondered if the postal service could stop being a money bleeding operation if they simply stopped handling billions of pieces of bulky, but very cheap postage, spam mail.

Hi Jim Great idea but I agree with you you have to always check because a few good ones get filtered out

@Dick, thanks for the tip on MailArmory.com Their website says "An employee at $20 per hour can easily spend 20 minutes per day dealing with spam and viruses, which adds up to more than $1,600 per year in lost time per employee"

@Robert, here are two places you can go to opt out of USPS orientated junk mail:

I don't think the USPS wants to stop the snail junk mail trade since it generates about 90 billion pieces of crap revenue annually for them.

@Tim, I have greatly reduced my junk mails after I started using pseudo email addresses on some sites.

When you post your email to some sites like Craigslist and company promo sites  you should create an account that will be acknowledged as a real email address which is required to get past some of the online submissions.  For example, I set up myemailspam@cableone.net which has been an active account for about 10 years and I have yet to check it.  I am sure that just by posting it here, I will get another 100 -1000 junk emails since ActiveRain's Google Juice will direct the bots to it - but I will never check that account so I don't care.  (grin).

SPAM is a plague and unfortunatly it is VERY HARD to block it on an email provider side.  It's a very delecate balance of blocking the spam but not blocking anything legit and many spammers adapt and do new stuff to trick email filters.  It used to be as simple as changing VIAGRA to V1AGRA, but they are much more adept at coming up with tricky things these days.  If law enforcement would actually enforce blocking spammers that would be a good start but since there's no penalty for spamming whatsoever in this country right now it won't stop anytime soon.

Very true Nathan.  I noticed one company is generating it's own separate email addressees from a single domain so as soon as I block the first sender, another email will come from someone else with the same message from that domain.

I wonder when someone spoofs your email address and then someone blocks that email address due the spoof spam email, will that actually block the email address still?
