My Top 10 ways for getting a Featured Post
This certaiinly bears repeating. Ther ehave been so many tutorials and recommendations in the past, but we can't possibly absorb all of them. So it helps to have people repeat good ideas in case we missed it the first time around.
My Top 10 ways for getting a Featured Post
As if I knew! I ain't got a clue. Wish I did. However, I do spend some time analyzing things to see how they work. While there don't seem to be any hard and fast rules for getting a Featured Post, here is some unwanted, free advice, so don't complain. You get what you pay for!
- Quit trying to get a featured post. Getting a featured post is kind of like finding the right person to marry. When you look with the specific intent of finding someone to marry, it never happens. As soon as you quit looking, boom! Love at first sight and marriage the following weekend.
Same thing with trying to get featured. The more you try, the more it ain't gonna happen. So just ignore it. It's Murphy's law at work. Of my first four Featured Posts, none of them were featurable in my opinion. They just happened.Get a large group of followers. You can do that by being persistent and consistent in blogging (get 10 per week, or more) and getting your 10 (or more) daily comments in. The more you post, the greater the likelihood that you will get a Featured Post. Theoretically. The more people you visit, the more people will visit you (tit for tat), and the greater the likelihood that those visitors will push the SUGGEST button. That's a start. Theoretically
- Stick around. Longevity counts. About 90% of the features you see are from people who have been here a long time. Couple longevity with persistency and consistency, and you'll get there.
Associate with people. They will usually reciprocate, helping you create that following. Look at the associations of the people with featured posts each day and you'll see that they associate.
- Subscribe to the blogs of others. Here again, they will usually reciprocate. Look at the blog subscriptions of the people with featured posts each day and you'll see that they subscribe. Check who has subscribed to your blog and then subscribe to theirs.
Join groups. Not just any group, but groups that interest you. That is where it is most likely that you'll say something of significant interest or value and have other members of your group suggest your post as a possible feature.
- Be yourself. Have fun. Don't try to be something that you're not because that will come through in your blog posts. During the week, I use the 80/20 rule for my blog posts: 80% are professional and 20% are simply me having fun and being me. During the weekend, I do whatever I want to do!
Help people. "Givers gain," as said so eloquently by Dr. Ivan Misner, the founder of Business Network International (BNI). Sure, you don't get paid for it, but as my wise old grandmother taught me, "What goes around comes around." Your reputation for helping others will spread far and wide.
- Provide good content in your blog posts. It's highly unlikely that any of your 200 listing posts will be featured. It's highly unlikely that a three-line rant will be featured. And when it comes to sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, as well as politics and religion, I've only seen two Featured Posts about any of those subjects. Could be a good reason for that.
Do it now! Go blog, comment, associate, subscribe, and help!
