Are Your Kitchen Cabinets Dated but You Don't Have Thousands of Dollars for New?

Home Staging and Redesign Minneapolis, MN.

As a Designer and Home Stager I come across many kitchens that need updating. Many homeowners want to update their kitchens, either for gaining top dollar when selling or for their own enjoyment.

I can't say it enough, "KITCHENS SELL HOMES". Period.

A total kitchen update costs tens of thousands of dollars and if you are staying in your home it is okay, spend the money and enjoy it.

If you are selling you may be wondering the best place to spend your money to update the kitchen to receive the greatest return on your investment; or you may be staying in your home and want to update but have limited funds and are wondering what you can.

I have a suggestion. Paint those dated cabinets! Yes it is okay to paint wood......trust me.

It's an easy update that will cost fractions of what new cabinets would cost and is especially the way to go if the insides of your cabinets are in good shape.

Take a look at this kitchen. Nothing has been updated for at least 20 years. The homeowner did not want to invest the money for new cabinets or counter tops but wanted an updated look.

 Old Dated Cabinets

My suggestion? Paint the cabinets, change the hardward and buy stainless steel appliances.

Painted and Updated Cabinets

As you can see I suggested a two tone look for the cabinets. Dark on the bottom, light on top that is fresh and modern.

The wall color was also selected to enhance the color of the cabinets and counter top. Darker than the top cabinets and lighter than the lower cabinets. A new faucet also added an instant update and the entire kitchen looks new and fresh.

So if you are asking my opinion "Is it okay to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets?"

"ABSOLUTELY!!'

It's a perfect plan Shar!  The kitchen looks like new for a fraction of the cost.  Just changing the appliances make SUCH a difference.  Great advice.

Shar! You've been in my kitchen! LOL! No, really, I have those cabinets and knobs! Well I did before I painted them white and changed the knobs years ago. They're worth painting.

Howdy Shar!

Totally agree with your post!   Our new house 'featured' glazed kitchen cabinets.   Yes, it was stunning back in the 90's - less so, in the new millenium.   So, I did a temp paint job in anticipation of my kitchen remodel, and voila, am happy with the results.   Kitchen remodel is now at the bottom of the 'to-do- list!

Love the kitchen transformation, I've never seen the darker color on bottom and light on top for cabinets...but it works!  Thanks for the post!

Isn't that great Tom that by just painting the "lovely" glazed cabinets you have shifted where your money needs to be spent! Love it.

Thanks much Rebecca. You see the two tone around here in new construction, upper end homes.

Why thank you Christine.

You just gotta tell it like it is sometimes David. ;)

Good for your clients Barbara! So many won't do it and it can add so much to the kitchen.

Big improvement Shar! Kitchens DO sell homes and to leave em dated is leaving money on the table!

Shar, I had only one client in two-year history who was agree to paint their cabinets. They loved it and also said that their counter doesn't look that ugly anymore with espresso color cabinets. Love two colors on your after picture.

Oh, if I could only get a recent client to do this, Shar. Her cabinets are probably maple, but look more like plywood -- flat-fronts, dark spots where the finish has come off, very ugly and over 40 years old (in fact, the whole kitchen hasn't been touched in 40 years). She adamantly refused to paint them or to update the kitchen in any way, and the house is still on the market 4 months later . . . Very frustrating. Your job here sure made a big difference!
