Capitalism Isn’t Evil, Greed is Evil

Real Estate Agent

I viewed the Michael Moore video, Capitalism: a Love Story yesterday. It's worth watching.  It was disturbing, but not because he brought to light anything I didn't already know, but because his conclusion was that capitalism is evil.   He suggests it be replaced by democracy. Huh?

Capitalism is an economic system, whereby ownership in business can be private.  Democracy is a form of government in which power is vested in the people and exercised by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.  Is Moore suggesting that our economic system should be government controlled?

All of the actions in the film that were deemed evil were actually greed run amok. Greed happens in every form of economic system and type of government.  We don't need a new economic system, we need to find ways to combat greed.  A new type of capitalistic venture, the B (benefit) corporation is a step in the right direction.

Does our economic system and government affect housing? You bet it does. Housing won't recover until the government takes action to cure our country's major problems and get the economy moving.

I have not seen the video, but I like your take on things.  Greed is evil and you can be Capitalistic without being greedy in my opinion.

GREAT POST, I will have to watch the video now and I am sure that I will feel the same way.  Greed can be evil and so can capitolism depending on the situation.

There was definitely some greed run amok during the earlier part of this century.  But the greed was running both ways.  Unions were so greedy that they brought GM and Chrysler to their knees.  People who never owned real estate suddenly became speculating flippers driving up prices.  And of course Wall Street went crazy giving loans to anyone they could and then selling those loans off to the next fool.

The movie did make some good points of how people used to be able to give a full day's work everyday for decades and the employer would take care of them all the way into retirement.  But that model simply did not work for the long haul and thus most of the companies that offered it are either out of business or changed their benefits package.

Micheal Moore is an opportunist individual who reinvents the truth for his own benefit. Period. I'm not a fan obviously. He really has his own "take" on history and contemporary subjects.

Based on casual observation Michael Moore has done pretty well himself under the capitalistic system. I wonder if he'd be willing to let us democratically divide and separate his assets?

I hated the opening of that movie.  The spin is incredible.  As for capitalism vs. democracy, I think right now our democracy needs an overhaul in the form of lobbying being outlawed.  We have the best government money can buy.
