May people keep asking me if we are under a mandatory water restriction... not yet, but we should all always be responsible with our water usage... see below. This has to be the worst drought we have seen in recorded history.
League City residents are asked to continue conserving water as repairs of the 42-inch line continue.Repairs were delayed over the weekend and began early this morning. The City of Houston is making the repair with their contractor. It is anticipated that the repair could take up to 48 hours, however, the actual time is not known until the leak can be exposed and fully assessed.
During this down time the City will receive water through a 24-inch line and will be relying on Gulf Coast Water Authority and the Thomas Mackey Plant to assist in providing water from the south. Galveston is also helping by electively reducing their demand and allowing the City to acquire some of their supply as League City did for them over the Easter Holiday when they had a severe water leak. In addition, the City is pumping its groundwater wells 24 hours a day 7 days a week in an effort to provide the needed supply for the City.
League City’s water situation is critical. League City’s supply is provided primarily from the City of Houston and is delivered through the 42-inch line paralleling Highway 3. This line is typically pressured to approximately 90 pounds per square inch (psi). During this past weekend the pressures were reduced due to the leak in the pipe, therefore, the normal water supply that is delivered on a daily basis was slowed. In addition, the City’s average winter usage is approximately 11 million gallons per day (MGD). Our total storage capacity for water in the City is approximately 8.0 MGD. Typically, 2 to 3 times the average daily use is desired for total storage capacity when peak water use is considered.
The City’s total water supply is 21.5 MGD and over the past week usage has been as high as 19.0 MGD. This leaves very little if any water in storage to fight a major structural fire. Water infrastructure improvements are planned and budgeted for this year and next year to allow us to add much needed storage.
It is extremely important that residents and businesses continue to reduce unnecessary water usage and halt all irrigation during this repair of the 42-inch line.
