In a Group of 23, It's Likely That Two Will Have the Same Birthday. Believe It or Not.
Okay, this has got to be some fun! Really, could Tim be correct that two in 23 are likely to have the same birthday? I have only met two people in my life....so I am looking for my felllow Mozart birthday sharing friends on AR. Leave your response on Tim's post!
Do you want to make a winning bet at the next party you go to?
In a group of as little as 23 people, I'm sure there will be many who won't believe that there will be two people with the same birthday. But statistically, the chances are a little bit better than 50/50.
Increase the group alittle more to 30 people and the chances of two having the same birthday goes up to 70%.
At my son's last baseball tournament while a group of parents were biding time between games, a parent brought it up and I just couldn't believe it. I figured that it had to be at least 100 or more. So we tested it out. There were about 25 of us and when we began stating our birth dates, it just so happened that there was another person with my birthday, March 12th.
When I got home, I of course had to Google it. Sure enough there's a page on Wikipedia about it. Back in my college days I probably could have figured out the math but the equations look so foreign now.
At your next gathering, have a little fun with it.
If you'd like to test it out here, leave your birth date in a comment and we'll see how many comments it takes before we duplicate a birth date.
