Cumming, 40 miles north of Atlanta in the county seat of Forsyth, is one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia and the fifth fastest growing city in the nation*.

But long before Cumming's dramatic growth, the Cherokee Indians inhabited the land.  Forsyth County was created from the original Cherokee Country and the area is rich with Indian history and lore. Indian villages and mounds are located near the mouth of the Etowah River on Settendown Creek and on Big Creek near Sawnee Mountain.

Known as the Gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city saw its first large growth when settlers moved in during the Georgia Gold Rush and a second surge after the completion of Georgia 400 in the late 1980s. Today, easy access to Atlanta via Georgia 400, a strong economy, and reputable schools has made Cumming a booming bedroom community.

With picturesque Sawnee Mountain on one side and Georgia's largest man-made lake with more than 600 miles of shoreline, Lake Sidney Lanier on the other, Cumming continues to attract thousands of newcomers every year. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to the Cumming area to enjoy all the hiking, biking, boating, and recreational activities that Lake Lanier and The Sawnee Mountain Preserve offer.
