Playing Scrabble Means New Words

By
Real Estate Agent with Stoudt Realty REALTOR

I recently played scrabble with a bunch of teenagers and lost.

What was interesting is that someone put the word on the board - Google.

A word we all know on the internet.

I said "you can't use that word!"

Oh yes they can -

  1. goo·gle/ˈgo͞ogəl/Verb

    1. Use an Internet search engine, particularly Google.com: "she spent the afternoon googling aimlessly".
    2. Search for the name of (someone) on the Internet to find out information about them.  More »

Wow!  I would have never thought!  Interesting how things change isn't it?  Even the dictionary!

I do crossword puzzles and find they are always adding new words to the dictionary. No one tells Windows so when I do spell check, it says error.

Isn't it funny?  Every year they add new words to the dictionary.  Many of them are slang or things I never heard of, but they are reported as being in common use.  Where was I?  I wonder how Google will protect its trademark now that it is a common word which can be used without capitalization!

Language is constantly evolving, and it is amazing how these terms just grow to become part of our vocabulary and the dictionary!

Surprised to find that Google is an allowable word in Scrabble. I play Words for Fun with the kids on my phone and know for sure that it's more lenient than the Scrabble dictionary. Then again, my scrabble dictionary is a bit old.

Google is a regular word that many of us use every hour of the day.  Thanks for your post!

When I think back on all the disputes over words playing Scrabble......we really needed one of those dictionaries!

This is just one of the many reasons I don't play Scrabble. I refuse to lose to words that aren't words with my kids.
