My reading gets a boost

Over many years I have accumulated lots to read. With my libary I am about 7ft 6ins behind in my reading, on the computer I am hundreds of ebooks behind, books downloaded with intent but languishing behind their .pdf status.

Have no fear, I am constantly reading. I read ~ I know stuff. To date I have been a sucker for bookshops, a weakness that shows little sign of abating. Barnes and Noble assists my addiction by providing other features such as ideal meeting places, with attractive hot chocolate as well.

In an attempt at organization I found that B$N had a new version of their Nook b&w reader, touch screen no less, ready for me to try. What an exciting piece of equipment. It is wi-fi, working from home, hot spots and of course from their stores, where on-screen ads tempt with cookies and free downloads.

In 20 minutes last evening I downloaded to my unit some 140 ebooks ranging from 20 - 400 pages, just some of my saved reading material hiding on my computer ~ so easy to do.

Today I was tempted with about 1 million free books (these may take a while to get through), and then there are the new books and magazines available for purchase (or, even, read in store for an hour a day~ a great marketing feature).

The B&N staff are well trained in promoting the unit, and answering questions. There is also training provided on some of the features, like loaning your downloads to other users (as you might share a paperback) and being able to download in libraries.

If reading is a regular part of your life, then you might well join me in this intriguing experience.

Larry - I'm with you. I like to read. I have more books, articles etc. to read that I will ever have time to do so. I now have a Kindle, but am not using it very much as of yet.

Donna - You know stuff too. Reading is a great habit. I expect you will get a lot of use with your Kindle in coming years. Readers look to be the furture of the book industry ` save a lot of forests too.

I don't know, Larry - I just like the feel of turning the pages and the smell of books.  I haven't given in to the nook, yet.  I have a group of friends who all share our books, so we are doing fairly well recycling.  When the books get older, we donate them to woman's and children's groups.  I know it's greener and neater, but - maybe I'm just to set in my ways, LOL.

Juli - you certainly get life out of your books. Mine get stacked up around me until the pile falls over ~ or I get told what to do with my books. I guess I will still acquire real books (especially 2nd hand). I am surprised that I have responded this well to cutting edge technology though.

Larry, I am totally addicted to reading - that's why I can fit so little work into my day. Nook was my daughter's Christmas present - I keep borrowing it from her all the time to check what new books are available. As I am writing this comment, the Nook is by my side, resting, until I'm back to reading in a few minutes. I love to read real books, but Nook provides you with lots of flexibility and also great prices. As you mentioned, many books are free or priced at 99 cents. This is a great supplement to paper books.

Nice overall review of the new version of the Nook, Larry. I love to read but still just regular books and magazines and printed out interesting stuff from my computer. My daughter has a Kindle and loves it. She mentioned the other day about being able to trade books with otehr friends for 14 days for free. Sounds like you are up tp the minute with your Nook.

Larry ~  This is so perfect for Cinnamon -- she has always been an avid reader and our library just does not sate her "habit".  Guess I need to get on the stick, here!

Hi Larry, I am going to be getting one of these soon. The Nook is great because it is compatible with the library format (the Kindle is not).

Wow Larry,  That is alot of reading.  I know who to call when I need to find something out, you probably have a book on it.  Have a great day!

Elizabeth - looks like we both fit in the "hopeless case" category. Previously my reading got out of control because I devoted a lot of time to writing as well.

JoAnn - the various features are mind-boggling. I am usually resistant to change, but here I am seeing some immediate value.

Tish - even us oldies get advantages from new technology. The nook looks like a mini version of the slate I had on my first day of school. Has a similar feel too.

Sandi - it won't take long to see the benefits. I spent a morning exploring free downloads. Now to put drection back into some of my reading.

Will - reference and research is part of my life. It prevents foot-in-mouth when discussing various topics.

Larry, I love reading and adore going to book stores.  Barnes & Noble is one of my favorites stores and it is great to stop by in the hot summer heat or to spend an hour or so on a cold winter day.  I notice that there are a lot of book stores closing across the nation and hope that this trend will not continue.  I do no know much about the Nook but I certainly want to check it out after reading this.

The new Nook is outstanding, but I'll have to stick with my Kindle for now.  I love being able to have so many books on hand.

Barbara - With a lot of ebooks being about 2/3 price of book versions, the temptation will be to increase my holdings rapidly. I am not quite familiar yet with using the Nook "in store", but the technology is certainly easy to use.

Larry - I am sure you are being well rewarded by your Kindle. I have used the p/c app for quite a while.
