From England With Attitude -- 45 Years Ago Today

The year was 1966. What was happening in San Francisco was in the news all over the world.

There were new words "hippie" and "flower power".

Some music critics claim that rock music was at its best in those years -- that it would never be better than the music that was created by the artists of the mid to late 1960's. The band that held the #1 position for that two week period in mid-June 1966 was from the other side of the ocean.

The guys in this band were known as that "other" super group from England. Despite their European origins, the monster hit song was recorded in Hollywood and it featured an Indian sitar, one of the first rock songs to do so.   One music critic, upon hearing the record, described it as "a glorious Indian raga-riot that will send this group back to #1."  He was right of course!

It is time to re-live those heady days of yesterday. To see the original artists perform the very song that took them to the top of the charts 45 years ago, simply click on the vintage TV.

Yep, those were the days. The BEST rock music, and much of it still popular today.

Darn good thing McCartney was around to write music for those guys!  Or they might have gathered moss...

It's good that retirement has afforded you the opportunity to post these again!

Good morning, Steven. Back in the '60's rock music was being invented. Those guys were the early pioneers of today's music...

Jay,

The early Stones did do a McCartney tune or two. Their biggest successes, with the exception of Satisfaction of course, came with Jagger, Richards stuff, like Paint it Black. They had a much "darker" style than the Beatles.

Your clues were good. I guessed this one, but had a doubt. I thought the Beatles were the first to use sitar in Norwegian Wood.

James,

Based on the time frame, I think you are right. Rubber Soul was just a few months before this. It came out in Janurary and Stones wrote Paint it Black in March 66. Give the boys a break, being second does still make it "one of the first" rock songs with sitar.
