Fathers Day thoughts

This is Fathers Day, and I spent the day with my husband Jon watching Rory McIlroy win the U.S. Open while breaking a slew of records.

I took this photo of my Dad, Harry Becher, on Fathers Day 2002, just a few days before his fatal heart attack. This photo has been a special one for me. We were watching the U.S. Open together, and he was smiling about something someone on TV said.

I had been flying up to Sacramento from Orange County every three weeks for a year, to spend the weekend visiting with him. Jon came with me as often as he could, and he was with me that weekend.

I called my Dad every morning and had been doing so for over a year. We returned home on Sunday night, and Monday when I called he didn't sound right. I convinced him to call my Uncle Freddie to come over and check on him, and he wound up being taken by ambulance to the hospital with a heart attack. Harry Becher on Fathers Day 2002

We flew back up immediately and spent time with him in the hospital until he passed away a couple of days later. Since this photo is the last, he had that great smile, and it brings back memories of that day watching the U.S. Open, I love it.

Jon and I think of him whenever we watch that tournament, which we do every year on Fathers Day weekend.

I hope that you all treat your fathers as if it might be your last Fathers Day with them. You never know. And I wish all of you fathers a wonderful day and a long and happy life!

Susan, your Dad looks like such a nice guy. What a great smile. I am so sorry for your loss. My Dad passed in 1988... and it still hurts... prolly always will.

Good evening Susan. When my father passed it also left a huge hole. When you are used to calling it is amazing how many times you pick the phone up without thinking. Sorry for your loss but he has a pretty good view of the Opens now and Rory did put on quite a show for him.

This Fathers Day has been even more difficult than usual because my sweet Uncle Freddie just passed away a couple of weeks ago. We had always been close, but especially so after Dad died and after Freddie's only child died in 2009.

When Dad died, Jon and I sold our Orange County home and bought Dad's house out of probate, and that is how we wound up in the Sacramento area. We feel his presence here every day. I have many happy memories of both my Dad and Freddie.

Thanks for sharing your sweet story. Our Father's Day was bittersweet, as my daughter gave her dad a photo collage of her son, Jayden. But missing from the photos was Jayden's little brother, Levi, who is still in the NICU at five weeks old. Hopefully, he'll be home soon and we'll cover this Father's Day with better memories in upcoming years.

Susan ... Thanks for sharing with us about your loss your Dad and Uncle Freddie. Sounds like you loved and cared for them both and will carry that with you always.

I lost my father (Harrison) when I was eight years of age and sometimes wish that I had more recent fresh memories of him to think about.
