WWDD? What Would Dad Do?

Happy Father's Day friends. I cannot let the day pass without paying tribute to my Dad. Thank you Dad, for being just the person I needed you to be.

Dad is a person that has devoted his life to improving the lives of others. He chose long ago to live by the tenets of his faith in God. Those tenets have defined him, not confined him. His faith has often been tried and tested and I can tell you it is unwavering. He loves and cares for the people around him. He is much more concerned with the heart of a person than anything else in this life. He has been a great Father, husband to my Mom, Pastor, friend and colleague, inspiration to countless people. His word has always been his promise and he never shied away from hard work, ever. If he knew of a need he would do whatever he could possibly do to meet it. You might say he talked the talk and walked the walked.

He will not be bragging to you about his material wealth, his flashy lifestyle or Ivy League education. He will however want to know that you have everything you need, food, clothing and a safe place to be.

My Dad is now 80 years old. Thankfully he is doing well. In fact if he were able to I imagine that he'd share with you his thoughts on nutritional supplements, well chosen foods and exercise too. He'd tell you to do the right thing...every time. He'd tell you to stop by when you get back to his neck of the woods. You're always welcome to come by. He might throw in a little Scripture too. It would likely be something like this, 'What Does the Lord require of you but to do justiice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God' (Micah 6:8)

Thanks again Dad. I get it now.

Excellent tribute to your Dad Charles, but I must say, I don't think that apple fell too far from the true.  You seem to have many of the same traits my friend.

Happy Fathers day, a day late Charles, hope you and your Dad both enjoyed.  It seems that the most important gifts we remember are never the physical gifts.  The emotional and spiritual ones are so much more important.

Charles

You are blessed to have such a great father, still in the world with you. And we both know you are also blessed, to have two wonderful daughters that likely feel the same way about their dad as you do yours.

David, Thank you kind sir! I hope you had a great visit with your Dad.

BTW, I like to drive fast and loved those super cool Jetson toos. It's not easy to capture the wonder of those Saturday morning when TV was much newer than now.   I spent some time wondering how those Jetsons got all that cool stuff to work.

What a beautiful tribute to your father. I haven't made a lot of time to read posts on Activerain lately...and I miss that. I went looking for some of my favorite bloggers and stopped by to catch up on your posts. I really enjoy your writing style, Charles!

Charles,

Although Father's Day 2011 has come and gone, your story lives on as a shining example of leadership, and family devotion. For that reason, I will still click suggest and I hope the AR Staff considers your post for a FEATURE story. Your tribute to your dad is what all people are striving for, someone to look up to with strong moral values.

You are walking in the footsteps of a great man and you're an excellent role model in the RAIN.

Sounds like an awesome guy. And as mentioned above, I think you're a chip off the ole' block. My Dad was similar. It was never about him, nor money, or fantastic accomplishments... His concern was the same. How are you guy's doing, are you eating good? Are you happy? And always chimed in with a little sarcastic humor about what was important in life, not how big your pile of toys were. Infact, he alway's cracked me up because as accomplished as he was, he was most often embarrassed if you complimented him, especially in front of other people.

Rene, Thanks for stopping by. Especially as we grow more mature I think it impossible not to catch a glimpse of how enormous it is in this life to have been blessed with great parents (or not, sadly for some). It was a big revelation to me somewhere along the way that greatness could REALLY be attached  to the simplest of lives. I had a propensity for extra large dreams that did not include living a quiet contemplative life like that of my Dad.

Ah, the great folly of youth.

Indeed: My Dad, who liked to picture himself (with humility and a rye sense of humor) as the God Father. He always made sure everyone around him was taken care of and demonstrated he himself had no need of many of the comforts many deem necessary. Many fond memories of being younger and my brothers and I would call each other to warn, "Field Marshall Von Fabre" is on the move and headed your way. Many laughs over that, yet as he got older he kind of turned into the Budda... always a smile, a joke, something fun or warm to say or share. As Henry Miller once stated (can't remember the book now), he was a man out of time meaning, he was a man outside of time or outside of his time. He was simply Dad and could very well live in any time. Agreed, when I was young my rockets were a glare headed for somewhere! Not sure sometimes where that was exactly now, but I was going there very FAST!

Then there's that other saying, Youth is wasted on the young... :O)
